Community Shows Appreciation
For Joe Holtzman's Services;
Council Sets Day in His Honor

This community showed its
deep appreciation for Joseph
Holtzman's manifold contribu-
tions to philanthropies, to causes
for the upbuilding of Israel and
in behalf of the advancement
of Detroit and its people, at the
dinner in honor of . his 60th
birthday, at Carl's Chop House,
July 14.
There were present city offi-
cials, Jewish Welfare Federation
leaders and men in every walk
of life in Michigan. The tributes
accorded Mr. Holtzman includ-
ed:.
An inspiring address by Rabbi
Morris Adler, who delivered
both the opening speeZh of
the evening as well as the con-
cluding remarks during which
he presented the guest of hon-
or with an engraved testimon- ,
ial with the names of the 100
men in attendance;
A testimonial, printed and
illustrated by Maurice Arons-
son's printing firm, in rhyme
prepared and read by Bob •
Hall;
Presentation of a citation
from the Common Council,
setting Mr. Holtzman's birth-
day as Joe Holtzman Day in
Detroit, by President of the
Common Council and Acting
Mayor Louis C. Miriani;
A tribute from the Jewish
community, in behalf of the
Jewish Welfare Federation and
the Allied Jewish Campaign,
by Isidore Sobeloff.
Jason L. Honigman, who, to-
gether with Benjamin Levinson
and Nathan Silverman, hosted
the affair, was • toastmaster.
Scores of messages. of greetings
were received and among those.

read to the gathering were con-
gratulatory wires from Mayor
Albert E. Cobo; Edward M. M.
Warburg and Dr. Joseph J.
Schwartz, general chairman and
executive vice-chairman respec-
tively of the United Jewish Ap-
peal; Senator Homer. Ferguson,
Congressmen Louis Rabaut and
Charles G. Oakman and the offi-
cers of Knollwood Country Club.
Speakers included also Hugo
Krave, former handball cham-
pion, who told of his experiences
with Mr. Holtzman on the hand-
ball courts and of Mr. Holtz-
man's having won handball
championships; Councilman Del
Smith, who wrote a poem in
honor of the celebrant; Scott
Carpenter, banker; Judge Rob-
ert Toms and Willis Hall, secre-
tary of the Board of Commerce.
Mr. Hall revealed that Mr.
Holtzman was the famous
"Mr. X" who was publicized in
H. C. L. Jackson's column in
the Detroit News on Jan. 15,
1942, as the man who prevent-
ed tragedies in many foreclo-
sures by forming the Commu-
nity Liquidating Corporation
and helped returned property
that would otherwise have
been lost by those affected.
This corporation was conduct-
ed on a non-profit basis:
Mr. Holtzman responded to the
congratulatory speeches with an
off-the-cuff address in which he
indicated his appreciation, while
emphasizing that no one need
be thanked for doing the right
things in life.
Among the guests at the gath-
ering were a brother and a bro-
ther-in-law of the celebrant, Al
Holtzman of California and Izzie
Sweetwine of Florida.

Arab Labor Leader Elected Mayor
Of Nazareth; Communists Beaten

TEL AVIV, (JTA)—Amin Jou-
joura, former member of the
Knesset and leader of an Arab
party affiliated with the Mapai
party, was elected Mayor of
Nazareth as several parties -with-
in the all-Arab city joined it to
defeat a Communist bid fOr the
mayoralty.
Mr. Joujoura, a member of the
Greek Orthodox Church, was
supported by Moslems and by
Christians, receiving eight of the
15 votes in the municipal coun-
cil. Abdullah Farrah, a non-
Communist who was supported
by the Communists as a candi-
date for the mayoralty, received
only his own vote and that of
the six Communist councillors.
This development is expected
to end the disorders in Nazareth
which followed on the heels of
a Communist victory in the mu-
nicipal elections two months ago
when the party emerged with
40 per cent of the total vote.
Afterwards, there were several

demonstrations by anti-Commu-
nists who broke up the council
meeting rather than permit the
election of a Communist Mayor.
