Beth Shalom to Build in Oak Park

Cong. Beth Shalom, formerly the Oak Park Synagogue, has
drawn up plans for a synagogue building in the rapidly expand-
ing Oak Park-Huntington Woods area. The building will be con-
structed on a five and a half acre site with 472 feet of frontage
on Lincoln Ave., between Coolidge and Greenfield, across from the
Tyler School. The proposed structure will seat approximately 1,000
people and will provide kitchen facilities. Future plans call for the
addition of a religious school building.

With Due Apologies

We Meant Bas Mitzvah
Instead of Bar Mitzvah

Reform congregations in De-
troit have called attention to an
error which appeared in a recent
edition of The Jewish News,
which incorrectly quoted Dr. Is-
rael Bettan, a speaker at the
65th annual convention of the
Central Conference of Ameri-
can Rabbis.
The statement attributed to
Dr. Bettan reported that "Bar
Mitzvah does not belong in Re-
form Temples and that it goes
counter to tradition. There is
no popular demandfor it in Re-
form Jewry."
The statement should have re-
ferred to the Bas Mitzvah ritual,
which, of course, applies to
young ladies and 'which has be-
come increasingly popular in
Conservative congregations.
The Bar Mitzvah ritual, how-
ever, is not only encouraged -by
Reform congregations, it is a
common occurance in Detroit's
three Reform congregations —
Temple Beth El, Temple Israel
and Suburban Temple.
