Armistice Commission Raps
Syrian'Shelling of Vessel
TEL AVIV, (JTA) — The Is-
rael - Syria Mixed Armistice
Commission condemned the Sy-
rian shelling of an Israeli patrol
boat on Lake Tiberias June 30
in which two Israeli policemen
lost their lives and five others
were wounded.
At the same time, the MAC
censured Israel for the presence
of armed landing craft on the
lake and for the fact that the
craft fired on the Syrian posi-
tions. This • firing was in self-
defense after the Syrians shelled
the vessel.

Throughout the land the traditional. cap and gown was a
common sight in the month of June, with new diplomas hanging
proudly upon countless walls and hearths. Of particular interest
to the American Jewish community Were naturally the . new sheep-
skin owners, the young men and women to whom we look forward-
as bulwarks of Jewish survival and who represent our hope for
the future.
There were hundreds of graduates from Jewish schools of learn-
ing throughout the land, but L as a former yeshiva bachur this
writer cannot resist pausing m special tribute to the :Yeshiva
University which this year awarded degrees and diplomas to some
350 young men and women, mostly products of the American
scene both culturally and psychologically. Times, indeed, have
changed since my yeshiva days, when not even the most imagina-
tive amongst us would have dared to predict the yeshiva some
day would become an educational institution for women. Happily
the Yeshiva now has the Stern College for Women.
I haven't any personal knowledge of the current crop of yeshiva
graduates, but the Ar;-!erican Jewish community will most cer-
tainly be enriched if the group follows in the pattern of such
outstanding yeshiva products as Dr. Joseph Schwartz of the UJA,
Dr. Irving Miller of the ZOA, Dr. David Petegorsky of the
American Jewish Congress, Rabbi Joseph H. Lookstein and others.

French Jews are less excited about the elevation of Mendes-
France to the Premiership than about the anti-Semitic outburst
by the communists against the Premier. France's leading com-
munist theoretician Duclos called Mendes-France a dirty JeWish
coward with Jewish complexes. Since communists are about as
concerned with moral scruples as nazis when it comes to advancing
political ideology it is but inevitable that they should resort to
anti-Semitism as a political tool.
. Has Roy Cohn cured them of anti-Semitism? This columnist
has rather strong doubts about it, but the young man, according
to the Chicago Tribune, claims many of the correspondents who
watched him at the recent national spectacle confessed their
anti-Semitism melted as they watched Roy in the role of anti-
Communist crusader.
The recent ZOA.convention diSproved the legend that a parley
without combat has no color.
Ben Hanft, former public relations director with the American
Jewish Congress, is looking forward to season's end and the
successful production on Broadway of his play "Napoleon the
Great.”
Confession
This item may bring denunciation upon my head. But since
it is in the nature of a confession I risk disclosing it. For six
months now Marilyn • Monroe's calendar has been illuminating
my colorless office walls, and although rErnust admit that not a
Single visitor to my precinct has ever raised eyebrow in objection
there were times when my conscience was not at peace with that
work of art. Instinct, however, has told me that Marilyn is a lady
of good heart. My intuition has now been rewardedMarilyn,
according to columnist Leonard Lyons, will enrich the UJA to the
tune of $50,000, the fee she is to receive for her TV debut on the
Arthur Murray show.

This writer recently criticized
the hearty welcome that some
officials gave to Max Sch.meling.
The basis of the criticism was
that Schmeling served in Hit-
ler's army and that his role as a
Hitler "superman" should not be
forgotten.
A Philadelphia reader wrote a
letter agreeing with this view-
point and the Schmeling inci-
dent prompted him to write a
moving poem. The Philadelphian
modestly scrawled his name be-
low the poem so the name could
not be clearly distinguished. The
name appears to read Ben An-
ton. His poem is as follows:
For shame, my America, so very soon
forgets the cries
Of the hundreds, the thousands., and
the millions fed to the flame.
The shriek of the mother
rising higher
Than the crackling of the sputtering
embers
Of the fat of her baby's flesh frying
in the fire.
My America, for shame, for shame.
My America, for shame, for shame, !so
soon, too soon,

My America, for shame, for shame. -
So soon, too soon, the wind removes
from camp at Buchenwald,
The choking, sickening awful
stench
That poisoned the air for miles
around
And made the fields fit only for
burying ground.
To remind the world that they numbered
six million,
Masterpiece of Joy in Strength of the
Superior Mensch,
Those gory Gauleiters of Infamy',,
and Death,
Who now have been permitted to squirm
into foundations arising anew;
And like the crawling worm, undermine
again the peace
So bitterly won and so soon undone
by flash -or bomb.
For shame, my America, for shame,
for shame!
Jack Molinas, pro basketball
player suspended by the Na-
tional Basketball Association,
has lost a court action_ to get
his job back. Jack was dropped
from the Ft. Wayne team after
it was disclosed that he had
placed bets on a game in which
he was playing. Jack bet on his
own team and was not involved
in any attempt to fix a game.
But he was dropped, neverthe-
less, since the league has a rule
against players betting. Subse-
quently, a grand jury confirmed
that Molinas had not done any-
thing illegal.

The chess match between the

tory by a score of 20-12. Many
of the players on both teams
were Jewish. The Americans
made a fine showing, with Sam-

to four drawn games. Larry
Evans excelled for the Ameri-
