Proclaim Tercentenary Period 'Time for Prayers Rejoicing'
NEW YORK — The American
Jewish Tercentenary, which be-
gins in September and con-
tinues through May 1955, was
proclaimed on July 5 as a per-
iod of "thanksgiving, prayer,
study, and celebration," at spe-
cial ceremonies at Cong. Shear-
ith Israel, 70th Street at Central
Park West, Manhattan.
A religious proclamation of
the Tercentenary w a s issued
from the steps at the congrega-
tion, founded in 1654 by the first
group of 23 Jews to settle in
what is now the United States.
The proclamation was signed
by Rabbi Simon G. Kramer,
chairman of the Tercentenary
committee on religious and edu-
cational participation; Dr. Bar-

gaged in a vigorous campaign
for new members, according to
an announcement made by Jack
Shenkman, president.
The drive seeks to enroll 150
new families into the congrega-
tion, bringing its membership
strength to a capacity of 600
which can be accommodated in
its auditorium during the High
Holy Days. It*

with Norman Jafee and William
Liberson serving as co-chairmen.

Laven Enters 3rd Term
As Executive Committee

Daniel A. Laven, prominent
community leader, has been re-
elected chairman of the execu-
tive committee of Yeshivath
Beth Yehudah for the third con-
secutive term.
Serving with him on the com-
mittee will be David I. Berris,
David Goldberg, A. Howard
Bloch and Irving Raimi, of the
Businessmen's C o u n c i 1; Max
Carmen, Rubin Grevnin, Arthur
Klein and Alex Saltsman, rep-
resentatives of the Yeshivah
board; and David J. Cohen, Isa-
dore R. Cohen, Daniel Temchin,
Rabbi I. Stollman and Rabbi M.
J. Wohlgelernter, all past presi-
dents of the Yeshivah.
The executive committee will
meet at 8 p.m., Monday, at La-
ven's office, 15905 James Couz-
ens, to map plans for the Beth
Yehudah Schools during the
-oorning year.
The Yeshivah opened its sum-
mer sessions last week with a
record high enrollment of 300
students, stated Rabbi J. Elias,
school principal. Classes take
place in the morning, with af-
ternoons free for a day camp
program in which nearly 200 ad-
ditional youngsters participate.
The camp program, for which
registration is still open, fea-
tures outings, swimming, sports,
arts and crafts and other diver-
sified activities. For information,

Yeshivath Beth Yehudah was
well represented among the win-
ners in recent Inter-Yeshivah
Student Union national con-
tests. Norman Lebow, a senior
student, won the top prize in the
photography division for his pic-
ture depicting school life, while
Deborah I.sbee, a seventh grade
student, won second prize in the
/essay contest, writing on "The
`Place of the Yeshivah in Jewish
Life."
