Romanian authorities have re-
x imprisoned Zionist
teased
leaders sand
and have upset the con-
viction by a military court of
two others. The two will be re-
tried by civilian courts.
The six Jews who were re-
leased were named as: Dr. Aha-
ron Cahane, Ephraim Guttman,
Dr. M. Zalman, I. Badi, a lawyer,
Mrs. Bluma Lupu and Yank
Makrlat. The two whose trials
were Upset were Mrs. Suzanne
Benvenisti, wife of World Jewish
Congress leader Misu Benvenisti,
who had received a ten-year
sentence, and attorney Jean
Littman, • who had been sen-
tenced to 15 years'. imprison-
ment.

JDC Calls Global Medical Conclave
To Discuss Health of Jews Overseas

House in Paris fors a four-day
international conference on
medical and health problems in
those areas in which tie Joint
Distribution Committee operates.
OutStanding items presented
to them early in the conference
were:
1. A statement by Dr. Etienne
Berthet, director-general of the
International Child-Care Center,
Paris, that the efficacy of the
BCG anti-tuberculosis vaccine
has been proved by some 50,090,-
000 such vaccinations that have-
been done throughout the world.
I 2. A statement by Dr. Simon-
Btesh of Jerusalem, director-
general of the Israel Ministry of
of Health, that Israel was stead-
ily overcoming the major health.

stricted immigration of recent
years.
3. Moses W. Beckelman, direc-
tor-general of the Joint Distri-
bution Committee, revealed that
approximately half of JDC's
total world budget goes for Mal-

•fare program in Israel—in 1953,
JDC spent $10,960,000 in that
country.
The conference was called, ac-
cording to Dr. Alexander Gonik,
head of the JDC Health Depart-
; menti to help doctors and medi-
1 cal organizations of the areas
in which JDC operates, to estab-
)ish and implement their pro-
grams.
Dr. Abram Abeloff; of New
York, chairman of the JDC
medical advisory committee,
spoke on JDC's 40 years of health
and medical service, pointing out
that from the very beginning in
1914 this was a major considera-
tion in the rescue and rehabili-.
tation work performed by the
organization. He brought with
him a message from JDC Chair-
man Edward M. M. Warburg and
JDC executive vice-chairman
Moses A. Leavitt, hailing the
conference.
Dr. Simon Btesh, director-
general of the Israel Ministry of
Health, speaking on "Health
Problems Arising from Mass Im-
migration to Israel," conveyed -
greetings to the conference from
the government of Israel and
from Y. Serlin, Minister of
Health. He pointed out that
never in history has so tiny a
country Isrb.el absorbed so
large a number of people in so
short a time. During the brief
period of three and one-half
years, the country's population
was more than -doubled through
emigration.
The health problems brought
about through this immigration
were' twofold: to provide for the
needs of the incoming immigrant
on the one hand and, an the
other hand, to protect and pro-
mote the health of the rest of
the population.
Mr. Beckelman welcomed the
participants on behalf of JDC

1947. Many changes had been
registered in JDC medical work
since then, including great
shifts in area and type of work,
typified by the fact that JDC
spent $10,960,000, or half its total
budget in 1953 in Israel—which
was not even represented at the
1947 conference. -
Speakers to be heard at
other conference sessions includ-
ed : Dr. • Johannes Holm, director
of the Tuberculosis Division of
the State Serum Institute of
Copenhagen; Dr. Robert P. Bur-
den of the Rockefeller Founda-
tion of Paris; Dr. Rene Wibaux
and Dr. Jean Huet of the French
Ministry of Public Health; Dr.
Jan. Groen of the Wilhelmina
Hospital of Amsterdatn; and Dr.
Lionel G. Cosin, clinical director
of the Geriatric Unit of the
United Oxford Hospitals of Eng-
land.

BUENOS AIRES, (JTA)—Jew-
ish community leaders called on
the Chief of Police of Buenos
Aires to protest recent "tar
bombings" of the Libertad Syna-
gogue and to demand action to
apprehend the persons respon-
sible and to protect the syna-
gogue against further attack.
During the visit, Police Inspec-
tor-General Miguel Gamboa ex-
pressed his personal abhorrence
of such "barbarous" behavior. He
noted that such activities are in
direct opposition to President
Juan Peron's policy. He also out-.
lined the steps taken to trace
the attackers and to prevent re-
currence of the attacks, two of
which occurred this past week.

A Heartening Verdi
Performance in Rome

ROME, Italy—I believe Italy
is one of the few countries where
one performs Verdi's magnifi-
cent opera. "Nabucco" (Nebu-
chadnezzar). This opera is, a
triumph for the Jewish faith.
Ten thousand people attend-
ed the opening of the summer
open-air opera performances in
the "Terme di Caracalla," the
baths of Caracalla, the Roman
emperor who had the extra-
ordinary talent for building
spectacular monuments; but
who is listed in Roman annals
as having treated his subjects
and especially his slaves in a
sadistic and inhuman manner.
The opera consists of four acts,
of which one plays inside King
Solomon's Temple. The other
actions take place in Nebuchad-
nezzar's palace a n d in the
"hanging gardens of Semiramis."
In the first act one witnesses
the destruction of the Temple
and the capture of the Israelites
by the Babylonian king. The sec-
ond act shows the collapse of
the king, which followed after
he proclaimed himself a god.
The author of the text, Temis-
tocle Solera,' who has employed
Biblical quotations for the opera,
has missed an important effect
—for it would have been of
great dramatic impact would he
have used that famous histori-
cal tale with the "handwriting
on the wall" of the words "Mene
Tekel Upharsin," after that par-
ticular blasphemic demonstra-
tion of Nebuchadnezzar. In the
opera the king. collapses and
becomes insane.
In t h e subsequent acts he
rallies his strength and pleads
with the "God of the Hebrews"
for forgiveness and promises
recognition and adoration.
That musical -portion of the
opera was the highlight of the
evening. Tito Gobbi, who ranks
as Italy's leading baritone, ren-
dered it with artistic and touch-
ing feelings.
His prayers . are heeded, the
idol of Baal . falls and in the
final scene the king and his
household, led by the High
Priest Zachariah, prostrate
themselves and render homage
to the God of Israel, to whom
the king promises to raise a new
Temple.
The performance was thrilling
from the musical, artistic and
scenic points of view. It was
heart-warming and encouraging
in these trying times for Jewry.
