Retirement of Hy Buller,
Cal Abrams' Success Rule Sports News

Hockey

By BILL WOLF
(Copyright, 1954, JTA, Inc.
The career of one of the great
Jewish hockey players is over.
No more will Hy Buller be
seen in action on the ice in
a rip-roaring, pro hockey tussle.
Buller has announced his re-
tirement. The announcement
that he was bowing out came
after a trade involving him was
revealed. Buller was traded from
the New York Rangers to the
Montreal Canadians.
As for his future, Buller
doesn't plan to stray completely
from the world of sports. If he
.can't be in action, at least he
will outfit others for action. Bul-
ler is now a salesman for a
Cleveland sporting goods .firm.
Says Hy: "I've got a real good
opportunity in this job." .

New York City's Board of
Higher Education has escaped
providing a transcript of the
hearing involving the ousting of
Nat Holman. The State Educa-•
tion Commissioner ruled that
the Board did not. have to pro-
vide the stenographic notes
taken at the meeting. Holman's
attorneys had made such a re-
quest of Commissioner Lewis A.
Wilson. But Wilson said that
"deliberations in executive ses-
sions are and must be held con-
fidential."

It was apparent that this
statement would not satisfy the
critics of the Board who are
angry at the secret deliberations
that reversed an earlier decision
in Holman's favor. Holman was
still awaiting a ruling from Wil-
son on his appeal for reinstate-
ment as basketball coach at
the City College of New York .

There w a s disappointment
over the fact that Soviet chess
star Botvinnik was not one of
the players who arrived to tan-
gle with the American team.
Botvinnik remained behind to
recuperate from the strain of
previous matches in Europe.
However, there were other out-
standing Jewish players on the
Russian squad.
Sammuel Reshevsky was the
number one man for the Amer-
ican team, and he was in the
spotlight during the official
welcoming ceremonies on the ar-
rival of the Russian chess mas-
ters. The Russian squad was
favored, but Reshevsky and his
teammates were determined to
play their best and, if possible,
come out on .

Cal Abrams is sticking true to
form in his new post with Balti-
more in the American League.
Cal has a habit Of improving
right after being traded. When
he - joined Pittsburgh, there was
a spurt in his playing. - Then he
leveled off and was not in ac-
tion very much. The Pirates
traded him to Baltimore,
With Baltimore, he has begun
to show more stuff. One of these
days Cal, who once starred for
the Brooklyn Dodgers, may find
the right diamond and make it
home sweet home. Perhaps Bal-
timore is the place.

According to an announce-
ment by the Master Bakers As-
sociation of Detroit the price of
certain baked goods has been
raised, and is now in effect.
Beginning June 21, the Associ-
ation increased the price on all
breads one cent a loaf, while
prices on rolls were hiked three
cents a dozen.
The increase was necessitated,
the Association announcement
stated, because of a recent 10
cent-an-hour wage boost given
to Baker's Local 78 and because
of an . approximate increase of
18 percent in ingredients.
