South African Revisionists
End Boycott of Zionists

JOHANNESBURG, (JTA)-Th e
Revisionist Party of South Afri-
ca has returned to full activity
in the Zionist Federation after
a six-month boycott of the or-
ganization in protest against an
attack on Menahem Beigin, head
of the Herut Party of ISrael,
which appeared in the official
publication of the federation
last December.
In a statement explaining their
return, the Revisionists reaf-
firmed their protest against the
attack on Beigin, but noted that
because of the present serious
situation regarding Israel and
the imminence of a new United
Israel Appeal campaign in this
country there is a "paramount"
need for unity.

Rewarded After
The Long Wait

By N. E. ARONSTAM, M.D.
That Maimonides, the 750th
anniversary of whose death is
being commemorated this year, in
his "Iggereth Teman" (Epistle
to Yemen) counsels the Yemen-
ite Jews, who were sorely per-
secuted, not to give up hope and
not resort to apostacy (Sh'mad).
He alludes to the Messianic era
in the following utterances, and
here I quote Franz Kobler's "A
Treasury of Jewish Letters: "As
to the period at which the ex-
pected occurrence will happen
. .. it will be when Christianity
and Islam will grow exceedingly
powerful and spread their do-
minions, as at present, into dis-
tant countries." Does not this
prediction fit in our present
time?
That the writer of these items
donated to the Detroit Public
Library a very rare volume-a
Hebrew grammar written in
Latin by a disciple of Archbish-
op Reuchlin Rochelle, 1529
which in the opinion of the li-
brarian is a very rare volume,
of which only three copies are
extant; viz: one in the- British
Museum, a second in the Biblio-
theque Nationale of France and
the third in the Detroit Public
Library. Archbishop -Reuchlin
saved the Talmud from being
burned by declaring that there
is nothing derogatory • to Chris-
tianity in it?
That Agrippa II, the last King
of the Jews and the last of the
Hasmonean Dynasty, indirectly
takes to task Flavius Josephus,
the Jewish historian, for not
adequately setting forth the con-
ditions that led to the destruc-
tion of the Second Temple. He
accuses him of double-facedness
in his dual allegiance politically
to the Jews and Vespasian and
Titus, the Romans?

JDC and Israel Will Pool
Tuberculosis Facilities

The five-day convention is be-
ing attended by top leaders of
world and American Zionism. On
the agenda of the convention
are such questions as the future
status of the Zionist movement,
United States policy toward Is-
rael, the reladan between the
American Jewish community and
Israel, and an expanded Zionist
program.
Dr. Abba Hillel Silver, Louis
Lipsky, Dr. Emanuel Neumann,
Dr. Israel Goldstein, and Robert
Szold will address the conven-
tion.
The convention also will ob-
serve the 50th anniversary of
the death of Theodor Herzl,
founder of modern Zionism.
Louis Lipsky, veteran Zionist
leader and, chairman of the
American Zionist Committee for
Public Affairs, will deliver the
principal address paying tribute
to Herzl.
Delegates will also discuss the
Jewish National Fund, the Pal-
estine Economic Corporation,
National Fund for Israel, Israel
Economic s, Investments and
Tourism, American Zionist Fund,
and Zionist membership.

Orthodox Rabbis Warn
Against Synagogue Sales

NEW YORK, (JTA)-The
Union or Orthodox Rabbis of
the United States and Canada
has declared that "under no
circumstances may a synagogue
be sold to a church. "It criti-
ciZed congregations which make
synagogue sales without first
consulting prominent Orthodox
rabbinical authorities.
The statement said sales of
synagogues may only be com-
pleted where recognized rabbin-
ical authorities have agreed to
such a sale because of circum-
stances. In addition, it was
pointed out, "when the sale of
a synagogue is permitted in ac-
cordance with Jewish law, and
in accordance with the approv-
al of recognized prominent rab-
bis, the money must be used for
the purchase of another syna-
synagogue."

U. S. Military to Help
Tercentenary Celebration

WASHINGTON, (JTA)-The
Defense Department will co-
operate in plans for the 300th
anniversary celebration of Jew-
ish settlement in this country,
Lt. Col. Thomas Corrigan, speak-
ing for the Office of the Secre-
tary of Defense, declared here
at a conference of the Tercen-
tenary Committee on Military
Participation.
Tercentenary committees on
military participation will be
organized in communities across
the country, and the national
committee will prepare a pro-
gram with specific suggestions
on how local committees can
participate in local celebration&
The committee is considering
the preparation of a special mil-,
itary exhibit, and will call upon
historical societies for momen-
tos, letters, citations, medals and
military paintings and photo-
graphs relating to Jewish parti-
cipation in the country's mili-
tary history.

An agreement for the pooling
of all TB facilities operated by
the Israel Government and the
Joint Distribution Committee in
the Jewish state was reported
last week by Morris Laub, JDC
assistant secretary. The agree-
ment will eliminate the long pe-
riods of waiting which TB suf-
ferers in the Holy Land have •
had to undergo before they
could be hospitalized.
The- agreement provides for
the pooling of all TB accom-
modations' operated by the Is-
rael Government (525 beds) and
of the facilities (825 beds) estab-
lished within the past three
years by Malben, JDC welfare
program on behalf of aged, ill
and handicapped newcomers to
the Jewish state. Funds for
Malben, as well as other aspects
of JDC's overseas programs, are
provided by the United Jewish Ernest Steckel. Elected

These are the sons of Jacob and Sara Suga-Uker, Mordecai,
Moses and Japheth. The entire family is now in Israel, brought
there with the aid of the United Jewish Appeal, and will be set-
tled in the upland regions of either Judea or Galilee. The Jews
of Cochin are among the several distinct Hebrew groupings in
India that have been migrating to Israel since the 'State was
founded in 1948. It is estimated that there are still 25,000 Jews
remaining in India, the majority of them in major cities like Bom-
bay and Calcutta.
