One of this city's oldest and xnost influential Orthodox con- gregations — Beth Abraham Sy- nagogue—is planning to build a new ediface at a cost of $350,- 000 in Northwest Detroit. Plans for the ground-breaking ceremonies will be revealed at a mobilization breakfast scheduled for 9:45 a.m., Sunday, at Horo- witz Catering, on Dexter. The 62-year-old congregation Will be constructed on a block- long site, located on W. Seven Mile Rd. between Greenlawn and Roselawn. When completed the building will provide theater seats for 1,000 worshippers, a re- ligious school for 450 children, a rabbi's study, administrative Pffic'e, club room and social hall. First located on Winder Street, then on Palmer, Beth Abraham moved to its present location on Linwood and Sturtevant in 1932. The congregation has been under the guidance of Rabbi Joseph Thumim for 40 years. In the past five years, however, .Rabbi Israel I. Halpern, now associate rabbi, has primarily directed the synagogue's activities. The landsite for the new build- ing was purchased over a year ago in a campaign directed by Abe Nusbaum.
