All Poultry Sold as Kosher Will

Carry Plomhe' Beginning June 13

All poultry sold as kosher in
Detroit must have a kosher seal
beginning June 13, it was an-
nounced by the Council of Or-
thodox Rabbis. This decision
was reached after lengthy nego-
tiations between the COuncil of
Orthodox Rabbis with the Ritual
Poultry Slaughterers of Detroit,
Detroit Kosher Butchers Asso-
ciation and the Kosher Caterers.
Sidney M. Shevitz, president
of the Jewish Community
Council, announced the Coun-
cil's endorsement of this step as
consistent with the Council's in-
terest in protecting the rights
of observant householders. The
new agreement will not result
in the raising of poultry prices
to the consumer since the
butchers have agreed to absorb
the additional expense involved
in production of the kosher
plombes or metallic seals and
their being placed on the wing
of each fowl.
The deci.sion, which will affect
all users of kosher poultry in
Detroit, was reached at a meet-
ing of the Detroit rabbinate in
the o ffice of the Vaad Harabo-
/inn on May 24.
The following is the statement
issued by the rabbis at that
meeting:

"In order that we may do away with
certain irregularities that prevail in the
`Kashruth' field; to remedy a sad • situa-
tion which has plagued us for a lorig
time, a situation that is threatening to
go out of hand -and is liable to under-
mine an d bring about a complete break-
down of Kashruth in the city; and to
Inaugurate an adequate rabbinical super-
vision in all Kosher poultry markets, be
it resolved that:-
1. A.11 Kosher-slaughtered fowl shall,
after a certain date, bear a Kosher seal,
even as we have always had a kosher
sign, stamp or tag on all Kosher-slaugh-
tered beef, calves and lambs.
2. Those 'Kosher' seals, which will be
Issued by the office of the Detroit
Council of Orthodox Rabbis, shall on
one side bear the inscription: 'Kosher'
in Hebrew, and on the other side the
Hebrew words for `Vaad Harabonim \re-
Hashochtim,' and 'Detroit' in English.
3. Those 'Kosher' seals shall be dis-
tributed to all qualified shochtim in the
city, who will affix same on the wing
of each fowl after it has been slaugh-
tered.
4. As it has to take some time to

fully inform the buying public about the
new ruling. it shall take effect on Sun-

5. No shochet shall from that day on

the seal being affixed on its wing.

ruling shall have his license revoked
and be declared disqualified.
7. It is further resolved that the
Jewish community shall be fully in-
formed of this new ruling prior to the
date when it is to become effective.
