It was also announced that the new agency-United HIAS Service - will begin operating from its Paris headquarters this July 1. UN Body Reports Israel Successful in Breeding Fish UNITED NATIONS. N. Abraham Shapiro, 80 years old, relives a scene from his glori- ous past astride his favorite horse. Mr. Shapiro is one of the original members of the "Shomrim" or "Guardians," a mounted civilian de- fense force which, before the turn of the century, protected the isolated Palestine vil- lage of Petach Tikvah from marauders. The ,"Shomrim" are the inspiration for the organization called "Guardians of Israel," consisting of Ameri- eans who are render- ing, service to the economic develo p- ment of Israel. Mem- bership in the "Guardians of Israel" is open to those who purchase $1,000 in Is- rael Development Bonds. Mr. Shapiro began his duties as a "Guard ian" at the age of 14 when, after his fellow - defenders had been driven to retreat, he withstood a band of Arabs sin- gle-handedly and saved his village. Aft- er this incident, he became a leading pioneer and defender of new settlements in various parts of the country, helping to establish the "Shomrim" as a traditional part of frontier life in Israel. In the spirit o Abraham Shapiro, American members of the "Guardians of Israel" today stand watch over Israel's economic frontiers. Israel Bonds are providing the funds needed to strengthen Israel's economic defenses and develop her industry and agriculture. , •
