Industrialist Walter Field
Publishes Verses as Hobby

The title page of the new
book, "More Truth Th a n
Poetry," carries this legend:
"To keep my head
Out of the paint barrel
I dipped it into
An inkwell—
-147. L. F."

The initials stand for the
name Walter L. Field, the au-
thor of this book of verses.
In a sense, these four lines ex-
plain this interesting publishing

WALTER L. FIELD

venture.
Mr. Field, head of
Mac-O-Lac Paints, Inc., and one
of the prominent industrialists
and communal leaders in De-
troit, has made the writing of
verses his major hobby. An emi-
nent Zionist leader, an active
worker in the Allied Jewish
Campaign, one of the creators
of the Zionist House here, and
deeply interested in the cause of
Jewish education, Mr. Field has
earned national standing as a
paint manufacturer.

Privately, however, he has, for
more than a decade, derived
great pleasure from writing
verses — dedicating them to his
wife, Lea, who is in her own
rights a leader in major Jewish
causes here; to his children,
Harriet (Mrs. Franklin D. Siden)
and Irwin, to close friends and
to important events transpiring
in American and Jewish life.
This week, Mr. Walter L. Field
presented his wife and children
with this attractive book, 'More
Truth Than Poetry," which he
has dedicated to them. But in-
terest in this volume will not be
limited to the Field family.
While very many of the poems
are of an intimate nature, re-
calling family experiences, re-
viewing the Fields' travels and
mutual interests, there are many
verses of a general nature to in-
terest all who may come into
possession of this limited edi-
tion.
Appropriately titled is the
first poem, "In the Beginning,"
which opens with the line "In
the beginning there was a little
cell," continuing to describe the
development of life, how "cells
were born by the million," how
"animals began to fill the land,"
etc., concluding with
"Such, dear children, is life on
this earth:
All men are created equal at
birth."
"Discipline of the Young" ex-
presses the author's views on
brutality towards children and
belief that reason, not the rod,
will build a better society.
Then follow verses dedicated
to his family: "Chief Big Wig"
written for his son Irwin when
. he was four years old; "The
Immature Mind" written for his
daughter Harriet's 18th birth-
day; "My Generation," to his
son on his 18th birthday; "At
Twenty-One," on his daughter's
21st birthday.
But interspersed throughout
the book are reminiscences,
comments on historical occur-
rences, references to family oc-
casions.
Here are some of the poem
titles : "Environment," "Emo-
tions," "Perplexity," "Vacation,"
"The _Grand Canyon," "Mexico
D. F.," "Land of Enchantment,"
"Shabbat at Brandeis," "I Saw
a Dream Walking," "War,"
"Work and Fight," "The New
Reich," "Unmotivated Hate,"
"Man the Sinner," "Israel's
Heroes of Old," "John Dewey"
"Andrew Johnson," "An Immi-
grant's Recollections."
Then there is "The Wedding,"
in which Author Fl -.:c1 expreTses
his deep sentiments aroused at
his daughter's wedding, and
"Life Begins at Forty," in which
he addresses himself affection-
ately to his wife.
"My Mother" is a tribute to
his mother, and the other poems
express his love for this coun-
try and for Israel and their
heroes.
The concluding verses, "Life
Is Good," also addressed to son
Irwin, advises him "never anger
or fret," and encourages him to
"study the facts."
There are many wise lessons
in this personal document—an
unusual book written by a father
to wife and children. It is, in-
deed, as the title describes it,
"more truth than poetry."'
