Circle Convention Delegates Issue Call for Increased newish Education CHICAGO, Ill. — The hustle and bustle of a miniature sort of New York is here, and it4 easier to see . and do things on somewhat the same level when you know time is short. THE APARTMENT of Mr. acid Mrs. Harry Selen, formerly of Detroit, is just about as lavish as some of the homes we have been in .. . It has eight rooms, with three large bedrooms and a huge living room with enough space to hold a banquet .. . One of the artists working in Harry's advertising agency drew . the murals for the walls. * THE CHICAGO parking ban led to a now famous practical joke whose aftermath was by far the funniest part of the story . . . A veteran ad man was ten- dered a dinner to celebrate his 25th anniversary with one firm ... At the climax of the evening, he was presented with a special pass, signed by Chicago's mayor, giving him the unique privilege of parking his car as long as he liked anywhere in the Loop . . . Tears of gratitude came into the advertising man's eyes . . He had no idea that the pass was a complete fake . .. His "pals" sat back to await the hullabaloo when he tried to use it for the first time . . Then came the pay-off . . The Chicago police, it developed, were just as con- vinced by the pass as the man who flashed it . . He used it blissfully for at least three solid years, and, for all we know, it is still seeing service . . . Not one cop ever questioned its validity . . • The advertising gent took special pleasure in demonstrat- ing its magic powers whenever one of his would-be tormentors was riding with him in the car. * ERNIE BYFIELD, whose Pump Room is the place where stage, screen and other celebrities must be seen when ..they are in Chicago, played host recently to Jinx Falkenberg and Larry Adler ... Both Jinx and Larry can do wonderful things . . . the only difference being that Larry needs a harmonica . . . At any rate, they asked Byfield how he happened to go into the hotel business . .,. "It was one of those quirks of fate," answered By- field. "My father owned the Hotel Sherman. He bumped into me in the lobby there one morn- ing—and took a liking to me! (That reminds us of a remark Samuel Goldwyn made at his studio once, apropos of nothing: "I ran into Moss Hart last night. He was at my house for din- ner!") * * * THE LATE Ben Bernie always stayed at Byfield's hostelry when he played Chicago, and indulged in his consuming weakness for bean soup with slices of frank- furter floating on top . . • One evening he ordered three por- tions . • . "Ben," remarked By- field, "is observing lentil again." • * BERNIE CREATED a minor sensation when he checked out . . . He called the porter on the phoned and commanded, "Send up a bag for the boys." * i '4, MICKEY WOOLF will be mak- ing an appearance at the Mum- ford Record Shop on Wyoming, May 29, at 3 p.m., to introduce his new Jubilee label recording of "Like the Moon Above You" and "Lonesome Road" .
