Closing Allied Drive Rally Monday
General Yigal Yadin Guest
Speaker at Buffet Supper
Determined that every pledge
slip assigned to them will be
completed, workers and leaders
of the Allied Jewish Campaign
are working intensly toward the
closing rally, to be held at 6:30
p.m.. Monday at the Woodward
Center.
Campaign participants a t -
tending the rally, which will be
a buffet-supper, will have the
opportunity to meet and to wel-
come and to hear a message of
vital importance from one of Is-
rael's great leaders, Yigal Yadin,
Chief of Military Operations in
Israel's War of Independence
and noted archaeologist and his-
torian.
Working towards this all-
important event, Trade and

the Egyptians out of the Negev,
the desert area that is the key
to Israel's future.
Yadin, at the age of 32, be-
came in 1949 Israel's chief of
staff and for three years de-
voted himself to strengthening
and consolidating Israel's citizen
army, now one of the world's
most highly regarded fighting
forces and a bulwark of the
young State's independence and
integrity.
Yadin the scholar has never
been eclipsed by Yadin the
soldier. Son of E. L. Sukenik,
professor of archaeology at the
Hebrew University and famous
authority on Palestine's ancient
past, he began his studies at an
early age at his father's side.
When not on active service with
Haganah, the pre-statehood de-
fense force of Palestine's Jewish
community, he studied, partici-
pated in archaeological expedi-
tions and wrote papers that are
standard works in his field of
scholarship. Even as a young of-
ficer in Haganah defending Jew-
ish settlements during the Arab
guerrilla war of the '30s, he was
making intensive studies of Bib-
lical battles that later helped
repel the Arab invasion of 1948.
Yadin recently returned to
the quiet life of a scholar at
the Hebrew University. During
his current visit to the United
States, he speaks for the peo-
ple of Israel who now face the
gravest threat to their free-
dom since they won it.
All Jewish organizations 'in
Metropolitan Detroit will be con-
tacted before the close of the
Allied Jewish Campaign for their
treasury gifts.
Visiting these organizations to
secure organizational pledges for
the drive will be Joseph Glad-
stone and Morris Mellen.

Honored With Certificate of Merit
Yadin arrives in the United
States today and his appearance
in Detroit, on Monday will be
one of the first in this country.
Yadin. as a military man, has
left his mark on the history of
Israel and the Middle East.
When the armies of seven Arab
nations invaded the new State
of Israel upon its declaration of
independence in May, 1948. he
became chief of operations un-
der commander-in-chief Yaacov
Dori. He played a key role in
creating the Defense Army of
Israel under fire and in winning
the battles that contained the
Arab thrusts and saved Jerusa-
lem. Then, given a field com-
mand of his own, he directed the
successful offensive that drove
