COME WITH US through the
eyes of the column as we again
visit Jackson State Prison . .
for the annual Passover cere-
monies at the largest walled
penitentiary in the world . . .
We paid visits there three Wed-
nesdays in a row.
* * *
THE FIRST WEEK was to pre-
pare and deliver packages for
the more than 50 Jewish in-
mates, plus others to House of
Correction and those sent to
Ionia, Marquette and Cassidy
Lakes.
* * *
THE FOLLOWING Wednesday
evening was Passover Seder . . .
conducted by R a b b i Joshua
Sperka, Jewish chaplain, as the
men wore yarmelkes and talei-
sim, and were provided with
Hagadahs ... Cantor Hyman
Adler chanted the prayers and

hymns .. • The ceremonies were
complete .. . the Afikomon was
stolen from Rabbi Sperka in ac-
cordance with ritualistic festiv-
ity . The piece of matzo was
later returned, and when Rabbi
Sperka asked what the reward
was, the inmates called out in
unison, "Freedom!" ... A strict-
ly kosher meal on Passover dish-
es, catered in Detroit, was
served, complete with grapefruit,
hardboiled egg, matzos, gefilte
fish, soup with matzo balls,
chicken, kugel and tea . . .
Among the geusts were Warden
Wm. Bannan, Gus Harrison, di-
rector of corrections, and other
prison officials and counselors.
* * *
T H E THIRD WEDNESDAY
was the chicken dinner given
by the State for the Jewish in-
mates, commemorating the end
of Passover .. This time, Rabbi
Sperka conducted modified serv-
ices, with those having to say
Kaddish repeating it in unison
with him.

.

DURING BOTH SERVICES,
the honor system was used • . .
no guards being present . . .
and the men were allowed to fra-
ternize in the halls before and
after the dinner.
* * *
WALKING THROUGH THE
three huge inner gates always
brings to mind the thought that
it's just about as tough to get
in the prison as it is to get out!
Careful scrutiny by the
guards, plus a thorough frisking
is required after presentation of
the official pass ... Visitors are
required to stand between an
electric eye to detect any metall
they may have on their posses-
sion . • We remember going
through it a couple of years ago
on our first visit, but didn't have
to this time . . . We did have to
check our car keys, however, as
a very necessary precaution .. .
The guards are friendly felloWs,
willing to cooperate in whatever
way they can, and strict adher-
ence to their jobs is an absolute
must that receives only the full-
est admiration from both in-
siders and especially those peo-
ple from the outside •
* * *
AFTER PASSSING THROUGH
the third gate, we enter a mas-
sive hotel lobby-like foyer, and
then onward to Rabbi Sperka's
office . • The Jewish inmates
soon appear in the hallway, most
of them dressed in prison dun-
garees, and others in the white
garb of a trustee . Here are
fellows who made mistakes in
life and are paying the penalty
prescribed by law . . . The Jew-
ish inmates are neither objects
of --curiosity nor or pity, but men
who for one reason or another,
have deviated from our accepted
standards of social, ethical or
moral behavior . • Some can be
aided with little effort . . . some
need medical attention or moral
correction . . . and very few are
beyond improvement.
* * *
WITH RABBI SPERKA and
his committee ever on the alert
to help in whatever way they
can, the Jewish inmates have
a planned Jewish program with
regular services • . They are
no longer without contact with
the community and the prob-
lems to which they will some day
return . . . They are not without
someone to whom to take their
problems, and prisoners have
