Bnai Brith Women Culminate Year's
Activities With Elections, Banquets

Elections of officers and moth-
er-daughter banquets will high-
light Bnai Brith Women's ac-
tivities this week as the 19 con-
stituent chapters of the Greater
Detroit Women's Council cul-
minate this year's events.
The various chapter activities
are as follows:
DETROIT—Mrs. Nathan Kan-
ter, president, announces that
election of officers will be held
8:30 p.m., Tuesday, at Carmel
Hebrew School. The evening will
also feature games and a film
on Bnai Brith Youth Organiza-
tions.
Mrs. David Grosberg, installa-
tion chairman, announces res-
ervations are now being accept-
ed for the installation dinner-
dance 6:30 p.m., June 8 at the
Latin Quarter, at which time
the dramatic group will present
the musical comedy, "All That
Glitters." For reservations, call
Mrs. George Karabenick, TY.

PHILIP HANDLER—The an-
nual mother-children banquet
will be held 6:30 p.m., May 19,
at Zack's. Through the courtesy
of the Copo Studio of Voice, the
Lyric Opera Co. will entertain,
states Mrs. Sidney Levine, ban-

IVAN S. BLOCH—A mother-
daughter banquet to be held 7
p.m., Thursday, at Young Israel
Youth Center, Dexter and Full-

business meeting of the season

are paid will be allowed to vote.
Sarah Deitch will be honored at
the meeting as "outstanding
woman of the year," and will be
awarded a certificate of merit.
Barbara Gorzeck will receive
honorable mention. A social
hour will follow.

PTA to Hold Drive
For TV Channel 56

Young Chess Player
To Play 40 Opponents

A door-to-door campaign to
raise funds for educational
channel 56, UHF, will be under-
taken on Tuesday evening by the
Detroit Council, Parent Teacher
Associations and the Better
Schools Association.
This means of raising funds
for an educational television
outlet in Detroit was adopted
after witnessing the success of
similar drives in other major
cities.
Channel 56 is one of 242 TV
channels set aside two years ago
by the Federal Communications
Commission for educational pur-
poses. Programs in the Detroit
area will be determined by the
Educational Television Founda-
tion, consisting of 18 institu-
tions.
Mrs. Irving S. Wolfe, active in
a number of community organ-
izations, is radio and TV chair-
man for the PTA drive for
Channel 56.

Arthur Pomar, 20-year-old,
internationally known chess
player from Spain, will make his
first Detroit appearance when
he visits on Sunday, at the D.
W. Simons Jewish Center, 4000
Tuxedo.

Dr. Nahum Pomar
Weismann, supervisor of the
12th Street Council Centers, Po-
mar's exhibition is creating as
much enthusiasm among local
chess players as the recent ap-
pearance of ex-world champion,
Samuel Reshevsky.
The match is sponsored by
the Jewish Center Chess and
Checker Club. For information

appointed chairman for the 59th
anniversary banquet of Detroit
Senior Bicur Sholem, to be held
6:30 p.m., May 23, at Moss Ca-
tering, announces Mrs. Edith

For New Beth Joseph Shul

Hyman Karp, president, Rush-

- "The Theater of Life," a series
of programs depicting in dra-
matic fashion the services em-
braced in the Allied Jewish
Campaign, will be seen on De-
troit television screens for the
next several weeks.
All three Detroit TV stations
are cooperating and giving time
for the series which features
top stars of stage, screen, radio
and TV.
The first of the series, "Three
Lives," was shown on WXYZ-TV
last night.
"The Center of Things," a
dramatic presentation starring
Joey Walsh, will be presented on
Sunday, 2 p.m., on Station WWJ-
TV, Channel 4. "The Center of
Things" .will portray aspects of
the Jewish Community Center's
program.
Medical services will be por-
trayed in the drama "Minute
from Forever," Saturday, May 15,
6 p.m., over WJBK-TV, Channel
2. Sinai Hospital is one of the
beneficiaries of the Allied Jewish
Campaign.
On Thursday, May 20. 8 p.m.,
over WXYZ-TV, Channel 7, the
drama of a brave woman who
has the will to make a place for
herself in the world, despite the
handicap of old age, will be un-
folded in "The Brave Mrs. Korn-
gold." Olga Fabian, Joe Mantell
and Clarice Blackburn will star
in this production. The Jewish
Home for the Aged cares for a
group of well-aged and older

An "open-house" celebration
with free gifts for everyone is
now in progress at the Metro-
politan Federal Savings & Loan
Association in conjunction with
the institution's 2nd anniver-
sary.
As outlined by Roger C. Rich-
ards, president, the celebration
will continue through May 14
and all residents of the north-
west section are cordially invited
to attend. He explained:
"It has been a pleasure for
us to serve the people of this
area for the past two years. We
have tried to make them feel
that we are their neighbors

"This celebration is our way
of saying 'thanks' to those who
helped make Metropolitan Fed-
eral the state's second fastest
growing savings association in
Michigan during the past year."
In addition to the free gifts,
Richards said items such as pic-
nic food containers, portable
grills, chopping blocks and re-
freshment coolers can also be
secured free of charge by those
opening new accounts of speci-
fied amounts during the two
week celebration.
