Mothers' Clubs Assist Allied Drive

Elections for Student Council
are once again here, along with
their respective campaigning
and posters. Running for Coun-
cil are: Danny Clarke, Carole
Polinsky and Betty Reid, presi-
dent; Harvey Lapides and Lor-
raine Small, vice-president; Sy-
bil Golden, Sandy Abigow and
Deanne Dunsky, secretary; Judie
Copley and Nan Scholhick, sec-
retary of the House; Bernie
Lewis and Marlene Danto, treas-
urer.
After the primary election,
two will remain for each post,
and another election will deter-
mine the eventual winner. The
Council will vote between Shar-
on Clancy and Fred Foltz for
membership on the board of di-
rectors.
Today was the baseball game
between the faculty and mem-
bers of Student Council and Hi-
Y. Admission was by ticket,
which stated the holder con-
tributed five or more bundles of
clothing. Mike Klynn, Jim
Weitzman, Jerry Starr, Marty
Albion, Bill Myers, Bill Kraznick,
Fred Foltz and Danny Clarke
are among those competing
against the faculty, which in-
cludes two women teachers who
signed up.
Clean up your school will be
Mumford's contribution to an-
nual Clean-up Week, April 30 to
May 7, but the date has been
extended for Mumfordites to
May 25. A tally is being planned
on students.
Congratulations to Brenda
Fried, who will celebrate her
sweet sixteenth birthday with a
luncheon Saturday, at Carl's
Chop House.
Future Nurses Club will hold
its annual picnic May 15, at Sel-
fridge Field Air Force Base,
along with other FN clubs in
Detroit. Among those attending
will be Phyllis Manheimer, Bar-
bara Heavenrich, Babette Gass,
Caroline Embury, Dee Porter,
Sarah Lippitt and Peverly, SiegeL

Congratulations are in order
for three 'Lites who have won
scholarships to various universi-
ties. Faye Weinstein won a
scholarship to Michigan State,
Eva Tennenbaum to NYU, and
Doris Applebaum to Wayne Uni-
versity.
Each semester, The Michigan
Bell Telephone Co. honors two
seniors from all of the Detroit
public schools. Carole Rubin and
R.uthie Rubin, the secretary and
treasurer of our senior class, were
the two seniors honored from
Central. The girls attended a
; luncheon with Kt other girls,
heard speeches by some of the
directors and took a tour of the
building.
Pupils and teachers from
Royal Oak, Central and Mum-
ford High gathered at Mumford
to take part in a panel discus-
sion. The topic was "Teaching."
The panel, made up of teachers
and principals from the various
school s, discussed questions
asked by the audience. Attending
from Central were Esther Mar-
golis, Doris Applebaum, Janie
Rosenzweig, Joyce Brown and
Martha Birdsall.
The girls' tennis team lost its
first match of the season to Coo-
ley by the score of 1-5. The
whole team was reorganized be-
cause so many girls graduated
last term. Esther Margolis and
Doris Applebaum played first
doubles, Jane Rosenzweig and
Rose Frank played second dou-
bles and Freidelle Shreirer and
Winnie Ledger played in third
place. In the singles division,
Elaine Brown was in first singles.
Judy Alzofon, second, and Bren-
da Hart, third. The girls' next
match will be with MacKenzie
High.
The Sportsmanship Council is
drawing up plans for a pep rally.
Heading this committee is Mau-
rice Cohen, vice-president.of the
Council. Assisting him are Har-
riet Fields, Zelda Gershenson,
Phil Stone, Rena Shrodeck and
Elaine Last. Another committee
is planning a showcase which
will be devoted to Sportsman-
ship Council news.,

Tau Delta Phi fraternity at
the University of Michigan was
given the distinction of being
the only fraternity on campus to
win two first place awards in
the recent Michigras carnival.
The booth, called U-Bang-E,
was patterned after an African
jungle, and consisted of cocoa-
nuts on vines, which were used
for knock down wooden Ubangi
heads. The awards committee
voted it first prize for the best
all-around skill booth.

Two hundred and fifty Detroit
high school students recently
were accorded honors, by the
Detroit Association of Phi Beta
Kappa. Among the winners was

School student and contributor
to the Tales Out of School col-
umn appearing weekly in The
