Maimonides Cock, Published by Yale,
Will Further Enrich Jewish History
NEW HAVEN, Conn. — When
does youth end? When does a
man realize that he's not as
young as he used to be?
Moses Maimonides, the cele-;
orated 12th Century sage who
codified the Jewish precepts of
religious, moral and eivil con-
duct, had his own answer. •
A man can be considered a1
youth "so long as he can stand
on one leg and put on or take
off his shoe," said Mainionides !
during a discussion of personal!
hygiene in "The Book of Clean-1
ness„" the tenth volume of his
code.
An English translation of "The
Book of Cleanness" has just
been published by the Yale Uni-
versity Press.
Translated from Hebrew by
the late Herbert Danby, Regius
Professor of Hebrew and Canon
of Christ Church at Oxford Uni-
versity. in England, "The Book
of Cleanness" is the eighth of a
14-volume translation of the en-
tire Code of Maimonides being
published as part of the Yale
Judaica Series. The entire proj-
ect is being supported by the
Louis M. Rabinowitz Foundation,
The Yale Judaica Series is un-
der the general editorship of
Julian J. Obermann, Sterling
Professor of Semitic Languages
at Yale, who wrote a special
foreword for the newly-publish-
ed book.
"The Book of Cleanness," one
of theilaregst of the entire Code,
contains eight treatises on ritual
cleanness, one of the most diffi-
cult and neglected fields of
sacred Jewish law. As defined by
Maimonides, cleanness and un-
cleanness are not moral terms.
In fact, he makes it plain, that
one is not obliged to do any-
thing to be classified as clean.
If a person contracted a mIse
of uncleanness, which, like a
disease, was contagious, he
needed to perform certain rites
to become clean again. More-
over, the status and worth of an
unclean person differed in no
way from that of a clean person,
except that the former could not
enter the Temple of Jerusalem
(when it was in existence) or
eat of "hallowed" and conse-
crated things.

Silver Dollar Given
At Guardian Savings
In response to many inquiries
Phillmore A. Leeman, secretary
of Guardian Savings and Loan
Association, 13646 West Seven
Mile Road, states that "for a
limited time only a Silver Dollar
will be given to those who
open an exclusive Guardian
`Sav-Ins' Account." He suggest-
ed that immediate advantage be
taken of this offer as it is due
to be withdrawn very soon.
Two weeks ago, Guardian Sav-
ings announced its new exclu-
sive Guardian $1,000 "Sav-Ins"
plan. It was well received by
the community, according to Mr.
Leeman. A large number have
opened accounts on this plan
that is available no where else
in the city of Detroit.
The Guardian $1,000 "Sav-Ins"
Plan adds new value to savings.
It gives life insurance at no
extra cost when opening a new
savings account on this plan.
Here is how the plan works:
Life insurance will be issued at
no extra cost to match the
amount of savings and will be
increased as additions to the ac-
count are made periodically not
to exceed $1,000 in a three-year
period. An account can be
opened for as little as $6.50 a
week.
Any person up to 62 years of
age may open a Guardian "Say-
Ins" Account. No medical exam-
ination is needed and the in-
surance is issued by the Mich-
igan Life Insurance Co. An ac-
count opened now for $1,000 en-
titles a person to free life in-
surance for three years while
earning 2% current rate.
Guardian Savings invites the
community to use its many serv-
ices, such as paying all utility
bills, issuing of money orders,
Travelers checks and United
Savings Bonds.
Guardian Savings is a member
of Federal Savings and Loan In-
surance Corporation, and all ac-
counts are insured up to $10,000.
All savings accounts at Guard-
ian earn 2% current rate.
Assurance Given That Jewish
Tourists May Visit Egypt
Egypt, unlike its neighboring
Arab League country, Jordan, is
permitting the entry of tourists
without discrimination as to
one's religion, race, nationality
or color, it is made clear in a
letter to Israel Tourist Service,
11820 Dexter, from Yehia Sarney
of the Consulate General of
Egypt.
The question arose in connec-
tion with the HMS Caronia lux-
ury cruise liner, scheduled to
leave 'Sept. 25, calling at Alex-
andria, Egypt, on Oct. 18, and
at Haifa, Israel, on Oct. 22.
International Travel Require-
ments point out that Egypt now
permits tourists to enter Egypt
after having visited Israel, and
allows tourists to leave Egypt
with an Israeli visa entered in
the tourist's passport.

sas and travel requirements to
