Meat Market Abused.
State Law, Asked to
Remove Kosher Sign
The Bureau of Foods and
Standards of the Michigan Agri-
c u l t u r e Department reported
this week that Meyer Liebman,
who operates a meat market at
18275 Wyoming, was asked to
remove his "kosher" sign when
its inspector, Leo J. Gagnon,
found non-kosher meat on his
premises.
The Jewish News was inform-
ed by the Bureau that in ac-
cordance with Sections 297a and
297c of Michigan Act 328; Public
Act 1931, a meat market which
carries both kosher and non-
kosher meats must specify it on
a sign four inches high.
When Mr. Gagnon and a rep-
resentative of the Council of
Orthodox Rabbis of Detroit,
Joseph Baras, visited Mr. Lieb-
man's meat market on April 1,
non-kosher livers were found on.
his premises. He was then given
the order either to remove the
kosher sign or to post one in-
forming the public that he car-
ries both kosher and non-kosher
meat. Accordingly, his kosher
sign was removed.
