Mich. After graduating from the
Detroit High School, and later
from the University of Michigan
at the age of 20, with a B.A. de-
gree, Dora Buchhalter became a
teacher at Western High School,
teaching trigonometry, algebra,
Latin, German and ancient his.-
tory. Her rare qualities of mind
and heart are attributed by
many of her former pupils as
their source of inspiration to
achievement. The Emeritus Club
of U. of. M. (50-year-graduate)
claims her as a member.
In the early clays of the Jew-
ish community, Dora gave serv-
ice at the Hanah Schloss Center
on Hastings Street, then the
core of activities for the -Jewish
youth. She also taught in the
Sunday School of Congregation
Shaarey Zedek, and organized
the first Young Peoples Society,
When the growth and broad-
ening of Jewish community
life called for organization of
the various groups promoting
the welfare and interests of
the community, Dora Ehrlich's
wise counsel and organiza-
tional ability helped bring in-
to being the Jewish Communi-
ty Council, the United Hebrew
Schools, the Girls' Committee
of the Jewish Community
Center, the Detroit Service
Group, the Women's Division
of the Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion, the Jewish Children's
Home, and the League of Jew-
ish Women's Organization.
She served as president of the
Detroit Service Group and the
Women's Division of the Jew-
ish Welfare Federation; Treas-
urer of the United Jewish
Charities; board member of
the Hebrew Free Loan Asso-
ciation, and vice president of
the Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion. Most recently, she helped
organize the Sinai Hospital
Women's Guild.
Through the ardent devotion
to Zionism of her late husband,
Joseph Ehrlich, Dora was in-
spired to give more of her un-
selfish efforts in behalf of the
establishment of Israel. Shortly
after the formation of the Ha-
tlassah of the Detroit Chapter of
the Women's Zionist Organiza-
tion of America about 40 years
ago, Mrs. Ehrlich became one of
its most zealous workers and
staunchest supporters. Through-
out the years she has served in
many capacities—pioneering as
Honor Roll head, leading Youth
Aliyah, JNF, Child Welfare, and
Detroit Chairman and member
of the National Hospital Cam-
paign Committee for the Hebrew
University and Hadassah Medi-
cal School in Jerusalem. Follow-
ing her Chapter presidency, she
became a regional president, na-
tional vice-president, and mem-
ber of the national Youth Ali-
yah committee. Hadassah chap-
ters were organized by her
throughout Michigan and in
Ohio, Kentucky, and Canada.
She has served with equal dis-
tinction as board member of the
former Community Chest, and
now is on the governing board
of the United Torch Fund. For-
mer GovernOr Bruckner ap-
pointed her to serve on the Cor-
rections Commission to help re-
habilitate delinquent boys at the
Boys' Vocational Sch000ls in
Lansing and Adrian. The Detroit
Round Table for Catholics, Jews
and Protestants claims her as a
charter board member.
The Central States Region
of Hadassah will also pay
tribute to Dora Ehrlich for
years of devoted service to the
Region. On May 23, 24 and 25,
when the Region will meet in
conference at the Porter Ho-
tel, Youngstown, 0., 33 chap-
ters will honor her. Mrs. WO
Frank, 19160 Indiana, is in
charge of reservations for this
event.
Dora Ehrlich's efforts and in-
terests were not confined to or-
ganizations only. Her wise coun-
sel is remembered by scores of
individuals who were the recipi-
ents of her personal concern. No
matter how weighty her per-
sonal cares and problems, they
became secondary to those of
friends and strangers who
sought her guidance and com-
fort, All those privileged to as-
sociate with Dora Ehrlich ac-
quire a "way of life" which
serves as a standard for the art
of abundant living.
