Technicality Bars Orthodox in Village Election

PORT CHESTER, N. Y., (JTA)
—This village faced a dilemma
that appeared possible of resolu-
tion only through resort to the
courts. The dilemma arose from
the fact that by the terms of
its charter, Port Chester must
hold its election registration day
exactly ten days before the
scheduled election—and, in this
case, the mandatory date is Sat-
urday, April 17. •
While, in the past, Orthodox
Jews have been able to register
or vote when the day fell on
Saturday, by voting • after sun-
down, this year, owing to Pass-
over, which begins at Sunday on
Saturday, observant Jews will be
deprived of their vote unless an
alternate registration date is
fixed. The village board has no
legal authority to fix another
date and the only solution ap-
pears to be a Supreme Court
order requiring the Board to set
an additional time.

OUR 28th YEAR

In a somewhat similar situa-
tion in Port Chester in 1940, the
courts ruled that a registered
voter barred by religious beliefs
from writing—even by mechani-
cal means such as provided by
a voting machine—was not en-
titled to assistance in voting.

Foremost in this year's fur news
is our 28th Spring Sale. For
style, for beauty, for value .
now is definitely the time to buy!
