United Synagogue's Michigan Region
Will Convene in Detroit on May 16

The annual conference of the
Michigan region of the United
Synagogue of American will be
held Sunday, May 16, at Con-
gregation Shaarey Zedek, De-
roit, it was announced by Dr.
Leonard Sidlow, president of the
region.
The United Synagogue of
America, over all organization of
Conservative congregations, now
totals 473 congregations from
coast to coast.
The conference will be devoted
to the theme "New Trends in
Synagogue Life" and will be key-
noted by Dr. Emil Lehman, as-
sistant executive director of the
United Synagogue, who will
speak on "Overall Planning for
Your Congregation."

needed for the new building of
Yeshivath Beth Yedudah had
been subscribed to, A. Howard
Bloch, co-treasurer of the build-
ing fund, stated at Sunday's
cornerstone laying ceremony at-
tended by a large audience at
Congregation Mogen Abraham,
Dexter and Cortland.

Synagogue Council for Beth Ye-
hudah Schools, and David I.
Berris, chairman of the Yeshi-
yah board, stated that Yizkor

sided at a luncheon honoring

co-secretary of the building
committee, with Mr. Berris.
At the. afternoon exercises,
greetings were presented by
David J. Cohen, president of the

discussion on "Is Conservative
Judaism Becoming the Pattern
for American Jewish Life?"
A special Mincha service will

Representatives of Conserva-
tive congregations in Detroit will
attend, as well as delegates from
United Synagogue congregations
in Bay City, Flint, Grand Rapids,
Kalamazoo, Pontiac and Sagi-
naw.

The cornerstone bears the in-
scription from the Ethics of the
Fathers, Chapter II, paragraph
8: "Torah increases Life, Yeshi-
va increases Wisdom."
Inserted in the foundkon
was a metal box containing a
scroll written in Hebrew and
signed by 65 heads of congrega-
tions and other dignitaries pres-
ent, including Morris Garvett,
chairman of the educational-
cultural division of the Jewish
Welfare Federation. Some 50
large contributors to the build-
ing fund were honored with lay-
ing the first bricks for the new
buiding.
