Jewish History Week Set for May 1 to 7

Prof. Salo W. Baron, president
of the American Jewish Histori-
cal Society, announced that
American Jewish History Week
will be celebrated in 1954 from
May 1 to May 7.
Commenting on the approach-
ing 300th anniversary of the es-
tablishment of the first organ-
ized Jewish community of the
United States, Prof. Baron said:
"American Jewry is displaying a
new awareness of its historic
heritage. Our Society has, for
the last six decades, served as
the chief depository of records
pertaining to the history of the
Jews in America, and as the
mainspring of research in this
field. Our resources are available
to all communities. We have pre-
pared exhibits, consisting of 54
photographs of major documents
reaching from the early period
until modern times and we can
furnish popular literature and
program material to young peo-
ple as well as adult groups. Our

LONDON — A proposal that a special Security Council
subcommission be formed with Israel and Jordan as mem-
bers and under the possible chairmanship of United Nations
Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold, to consider relations
between the two states, was discussed by Foreign Secretary
Anthony Eden and Secretary of State John Foster Dulles,
at their meeting here Monday morning, the Jewish Tele-
graphic Agency learned 'Tuesday.
The two statesmen had a number of proposals before
them on handling Israel-Jordan relations, which they saw
as the key to pacification of the Middle East. However, the
Security Council subcommission idea found greatest favor
in the eyes of the western diplomats because the establish-
ment of such a unit would be a procedural matter and there-
fore not subject to veto in the Security Council by the
Soviet Union.
The British were pictured as optimistic about their
chances of getting Jordan to participate in such a con-
ference. despite its refusal to come to a meeting called by
the UN Secretary General under the terms of Article XII
of the Israel-Jordan Armistice agreement.
In addition, it was learned, the governments of the
United States and Britain are to impress upon Israel and
the Arab states that border incidents must cease. It is be-
lieved likely that Secretaries Dulles and Eden discussed pen-
alties to be imposed on those states which refuse to co-
operate in ending the border warfare. However, an official
spokesman refused to comment on this aspect of the talks.
