Pa'ssover-Easter
Link Described by
Catholic Writer
"The Easter Book" by Francis
X. Weiser, S.J., published by
Harcourt, Brace & Co., 383 Madi-
son, N. Y. 17, is, of course, strict-
ly a Christian book. But it con-
tains several references to Jew-
ish origins which will draw the
attention of all who are inter-
ested in Hebraic backgrounds of
worship.
Fr. Weiser delineates the
origin of the sacred festival's
name as follows:
"This feast is called Pasch by
most nations: Greeks and Ro-
manians (P a s c la -a), Italians
(Pasqua), Spaniards and Portu-
guese (Paaske), Gaels (case).
This word is taken from the
Greek (and Latin) 'Pa.scha'
which comes from the Hebrew
word Pesach (Passover). The
Passover was celebrated by the
Jews on the fourteenth day of
Nisan, which began about a week
before the full moon of spring.
It was instituted to comme-
morate the deliverance of the
people of Israel the night before
their departure from Egypt. It
was the command of God, an-
nounced by Moses, that each
Hebrew family should slay a
young lamb without blemish,
and sprinkle its blood on the
frame of the door. In the eve-
ning the lamb was to be roasted,
no bones were to be broken, and
it was to be eaten with un-
leavened bread and bitter herbs
by all members of the family.
According to Divine ordination,
this rite was to be repeated
every year in a solemn ceremony
on the eve of the feast, and is
still celebrated- by Jewish people
everywhere today. Jesus ob-
served it for the last time on
the night before He died.
"There is a significant link be-
tween the Jewish Passover and
the Christian Easter, because
Christ died on Passover Day. It
is also symbolic, because the
iamb that had to be sacrificed
for the deliverance of Israel is
considered by the Church as
prophetic of Him who Is the
`Lamb of God, who takes away
the sins of the world' (John 1,
29). Thus the name and mean-
ing of the Hebrew Pesach was
devoutly accepted into t h e
Christian Liturgy."
Thus an eminent Christian
views the significance of the
link between Passover and his
Easter.
Fr. Weiser speaks of "the use
of ashes as a"token of penance
and sorrow ... often mentioned
in the Scripture of the Old Tes-
tament and adds : "The Church
accepted it from Jewish tradi-
tion and preserved its original
meaning." He also writes about
the spring cleaning custom and
states: "This traditional spring
cleaning, of course, is to make
the home as neat as possible for
the greatest holidays of the year,
a custom taken. from the ancient
Jewish practice of a ritual
cleansing and sweeping of the
whole house as prescribed in
preparation for the Feast of
Passover."
