high school teachers should
be developed; American Jew-
ish young people should be
urged to train to teach in Is-
rael for at least two or three
years;
welfare
federations
should set aside funds to be
used only for such projects.
The Jewish youth of America
can be especially helpful in this
work. Organizations such as
Young Judaea and BBYO, which
so often raise fUnds for Israel,
should adopt the high schools
of Israel as their special contri-
bution to Jewish life. They
could undertake projects to give
scholarships, to buy books and
equipment for school libaries.
Much could be done to pro-
mote the development of Israel
if we in America would extend
our development program to in-
clude this vital part of Israeli
life. In a well-rounded effort to
build Israel this could become
one of our greatest contribu-
tions.

High schools in Israel are
private institutions, sponsored
by non-governmental groups,
and tuitions are high. It costs
more to spend a year studying
in a high school than it does
to study at the Hebrew Uni-
versity — and there are very
few families who can afford
the additional expense.
But the problem goes even
deeper than that. Of the 4,500
students able to attend high
school, about 95% are Ashkena-
zim while only 5% are Sephar-
dim. The general population is
almost equally divided.
When an Ashkenazic family
with two or three children must
sacrifice to send a child through
high school it is hard enough:
•In a Sephardic family with eight
or more children, it is impos-
sible to pay for the high school
education of one child.
In the future, few students
will go on with their higher
education, which means that
Israel will not have enough edu-
cated people to run a modern
democratic state. At the same
time an elite might arise to *un-
dermine the democratic char-
acter of the country.
At present the hard-pressed
state can do little or nothing
about this problem, much as it
would like to. Thus it is up to
world Jewry and American
Jewry, in particular, to assume
the responsibility for improving
the situation.
Education is as important to
Israel as economic progress. In
recent years we have seen how
economic aid in the world is
useless when there is no one
who knows how to make use of
it.
The Jewish Community Cen-
ter's spring vacation day camp
has a few openings left for en-
rollment. The camp offers chil-
dren 6 to 12' four days of fun,
from April 20 to 23.
Optional bus transportation is
available, to and from home, for
all children living in the North-
west, Dexter and 12th St. areas.
Passover dietary laws will be
I observed. Children bring their
own lunches and the Center
provides juice and cookies.
