cial problems with which. Hit-
ler's Reich believed itself con-
fronted, the Jewish problem
was apparently the only one
that demanded a final solu-
tion,but'there were always ad-
vocates'for a final solution for
the Slays. ..
"This, alas, is a book of
much evidence and few sum-
mations: a book of facts, from
which as yet little conclusion
can be drawn. But these facts,
so far as they can be pieced
together, provide analogies
that can be of value at the
present day. ..
"Job on his dunghill wished
`that mine adversary had writ-
ten a book' and his prayer •has
been answered, for indeed
there is nothing that Vis ad-
versary did not. commit to pa-
per. I have spent close on four
years among these documents
and I have found their com-
pany neither gloomy nor de-
pressing. For on many pages
darts and gleams that thing
which prevents all govern-
ment becoming a living hell—
human fallibility. Eichmann
fails to fill the human death-
trains, the satellite govern-
ment Ministers refuse to an-
swer letters, someone gets the
figures wrong, and someone
else gives the show away too
soon. And so the immense dis-
aster was partly whittled
down. How much worse it
would have been if the French
had not been inconsistent, if
the Italians had not been
easygoing, t h e Hungarians
jealous, the Romanians cor-
rupt, and the Germans them-
selves wedded to protocol. It
is possible that murderous ra-
cialism is something ineradic-
able in the nature of ants and
men, but the Robot State
which will give it full effect
cannot exist and never

ial that is shocking and causes
one's stomach to turn—even in
the re-reading what one already
knows—in the material gathered
by Reitlinger.
"The Final Solution," publish-
ed by Beechhurst Press (11 E.
36th. NY16), was written by an
Englishman whose concern was
aroused during the Nuremberg
trials. As the above indicates,
he delved into the records. He
found evidence—and it disturb-
ed him enough to cause him to
appeal to mankind's reason, to
,ask for an end of the robot
state that seeks to destroy man.
This book may well be called
the complete story. Mr. Reit-
linger begins with a description
of the forced emigration and
pogroms of 1939, the Nuremberg
laws, the activities of Heydrich
and Eichmann.
Then he turns to the depor-
tations, to the establishment of
the ghettoes where Jews were
murdered wholesale. to Ausch-
witz • and the gas chambers.
