Sen. Ferguson Defends

'Under God' Amendment

Editor, The Jewish News:
I am interested in what you
have to say in regard to a change
in the Pledge of Allegiance to
the Flag by inserting the words
"Under God." I do not believe
that this in any way violates
the Fifth Amendment which
provides that Congress shall
make no law respecting the
establishment of a religion or
prohibiting the free exercise
thereof. Certainly the use of the 8—DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
mere words "Under God" in the
Friday, April 2, 1954
Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag
is not the establishing of a re-
ligion nor can it, by any stretch
of the imagination, be con-
strued as a prohibition of the
free exercise thereof.
May 8, 1908, Congress re-
enacted the motto "In God We
Trust" therefore inscribed on
certain denominations of gold
and silver coins of the United
States providing that it shall
hereafter be inscribed on all
gold and silver denominations.
This was not the establishment
of a religion, nor the prohibi-
tion of the free exercise thereof.
I hope we can pass this
amendment because I believe we
need a re-awakening of spiritual
faith in this country. I would
be the last to want to establish
a religion under law or to pro-
hibit free exercise thereof.
