$25,000 Gifts Pledged by Detroiters
To Yeshiva U. in Dr., Belkin's Honor

Responding to the needs of
the first university established
in this country under Jewish
auspices-Yeshiva University-
and its rabbinic and educational
departments, $25,000 was pledged
here on the occasion of the test-
imonial dinner given Tuesday,
at Hotel Tuller, in honor of Dr.
Samuel Belkin, president of the
university.
A committee of rabbis and lay
leaders representing Detroit
Jews in all walks of life joined
in honoring Dr. Belkin on the
10th anniversary of his univer-
sity. presidency. The dinner was
attended by 300 contributors to
the Yeshiva fund.

Greetings also were extended by
Police Commissioner Don Leon-
ard, in behalf of Mayor Cobo,
who was unable to attend; Rab-

Community; Rabbi Isaac Stoll-
man and Rabbi M. J. Wohlge-
lenter, who introduced the guest

liturgical songs, accompanied by
Shoshana Friedman.
Rabbi Leon D. Stitskin of New
York, in a brief address, outlined
the needs of Yeshiva University
and the program planned in its
numerous departments includ-
ing the Albert Einstein Medical
School soon to be established.
In his address, Dr. Belkin des-
cribed the functions of the
numerous Yeshiva University de-
partments and told of the inter-
! national recognition accorded
the university. He called the
university not only a school but
a great movement in American
Jewish life, and said it is Con-
cerned with the basic needs of
the world in which we live.
He emphasized- the necessity
of perpetuating the traditions
of Sinai, of Jewry's saints and
sages throughout the ages.
During his visit here Dr. Bel-
1 kin, lectured to a group of 50

Beth Yehudah and witnessed the
breaking of ground for the new
Yeshiva building here.

Dr. Parkes to Occupy
Temple Israel Pulpit

Dr. James W. Parkes, of Eng-
land, eminent Christian scholar,
historian and author of "Juda-
ism and Christianity," will be
the guest of Rabbi Leon Fram
of Temple Israel, during his vis-
it to Detroit the coming week.
Dr. Parkes is touring America
mainly for the purpose of ad-
dressing Christian theological
seminaries on his scholarly re-
searches in the field of the his-
tory of the early church and the
synagogue. He will occupy the
pulpit of Temple Israel this eve-
ning.
Dr. Parkes, a Church of Eng-
land clergyman, has for 25 years
carried on research into the his-
torical relations of church and
synagogue. He has written a
dozen books on the religious, po-
litical and economic aspects of
the relations between Judaism
and Christianity, and is an au-
thority on the historical origins
and contemporary significance
of anti-semitism,

Leonard W. Hall, chairman of
the Republican National Com-

Katzen and Louis S. Rothschild,
prominent Republican leaders,
have joined the Centennial Com-
mittee for the celebration of
the 100-year Jubilee of the Re-
publican Party.
Katzen is a cabinet chairman
of the lawyers division of the
United Jewish Appeal in New
York, and is an active leader of
the Federation of Jewish Chari-
ties and pro-Israel movements.
An ex-president of the Repub-
lican National Club, he currently

National Committee on minority
problems.
