Don't Blame St. Patrick's
Day for the Purim Error
Judge Polier to Dedicate
Israel Memorial to Mother
Judge Justine Wise Polier, of
New York and national presi
dent of the Women's Division of
the American Jewish Congress,
left for. Israel to dedicate the
Louise Waterman Wise Memori-
al Youth Center in Jerusalem.,
March 30, in memory of her
mother.
There is an old reference to
Purim's absolvent of blame for
drink: that on that day it is
even excusable for people to mix
up the terms "cursed be Morde-
cai" with "blessed be Haman."
An old Purim parody reads:
"Said Rabbi Bakbuk (Bottle) :
`Whosoever drinks wine on Pur-
im, and becomes as intoxicated
as Noah the Righteous, will be
protected the rest of. the year
from the evil effects of bad
water . . ."
We could invoke this act of
absolution in offering excuses
for the reversal of the Hebrew
lines on the front page of our
last issue, except that the forms
were closed not on Purim but
a day earlier—on St. Patrick's
Day. •
But in making this correction
we add the avowal that neither
the spirits of Purim nor of St.
Patrick's Day were responsible
for the error: it was a simple
technical blunder, for which we
express our post-Purim apolo-
gies to our readers.
