PHIL KAPLAN tells of the
wealthy gent showing an ac-
quaintance his estate in Tampa,
F 1 a. "Beautiful 1 a w n,"
murmured the visitor ... "Ought
to be," said rich Mr. X compla-
cently. "Had the whole thing
brought here as sod at $1 a
square foot." . . . "And those
trees!" exclaimed the other.
"I've never seen more perfect
specimens-" . . . "Had 'em trans-
planted," confided Mr. X. "Cost
me $2,000 each." ... "Ah," sighed
the visitor meditatively. "what

STANLEY S. KRAUSE, bar-
rister, gets chuckles when telling
of the merchant who was called
upon to defend a suit brought
by a dissatisfied customer... Just
before the conclusion of the pro-
ceedings, the merchant had to
go on a trip to another state
. . Accordingly, he instructed
his attorney to telegraph him
when a decision had been reach-
ed by the judge trying the suit
. . . When the merchant arrived
he received a message from his
lawyer, saying "Right has tri-
umphed." . . The merchant
hastily wired his lawyer, "Ap-
peal at once."

WALTER KLEIN always tries
his jokes on his wife . . . adopt-
ing the philosophy that if your
wife laughs at a joke, you can be
sure that it's either a darned
good joke, or you've got a darned
good wife . . . "In my own case,"
says Walter, "well, I think I've
got a good wife!"

earned his degree, and in the
building business, in which he
was highly successful. But his
heart was in song and music
and he sacrificed lucrative ac-
tivity for Tin Pan Alley two
years ago. In that short space
of time he has proven to his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry
Lapides of 12332 Broadstreet
that they were justified in
placing faith in his love for
music. He has made his mark
and predictions are that the
name Hy Gilbert, which he uses
professionally for authorship of
his songs, will soon be known
worldwide.
Mitchell Miller, head of Co-
lumbia Records, which have pro-
duced his "Speedy Gonzales,"
sung by . Minday Carson, his
popular "A Step in the Right
Direction' and other songs soon
to be released, told Hy's father
recently that it is phenomenal
in the music world for a young
man — Hy is 27 who has just
come to a big city which is filled
with great talent to have made
his mark so fast, in a period of
two years, by having his record-
ings accepted by MGM, RCA-
Victor, Mercury, Decca, Colum-
bia and Capitol.
Hy's "Parade" was accepted
by Decca and is sung by Charlie
Applewhite. Joyce Taylor sings
his "Babe in the Woods," a Mer-
cury product. "Repeat Perform-
ance" was released by RCA-Vic-
tor. MGM issued his "Ambushed."
