Israel Gives Priority to
Economic Development

NEW YORK, (JTA)—The *gov-
ernment of Israel is giving the
highest priority to the economic
development of the country, Loy
Joseph, Israel Minister of De-
velopment declared here this
week. Dr. Joseph will address the
first International and Planning
Conference for Israel sponsored

by the State of Israel Bond Or-
ganization.

KISHON HARBOR, Israel, (IIP)—Sulphuric acid is pumped
into a waiting tanker as the first such shipment to be sent abroad by
Israel. Not alone is it the first shipment of its kind, but is the
initial shipment to be sent from this newly-completed harbor.
Developed with the aid of Israel Bond investments, the port has I
a 500 ton capacity tank and pumping equipment to force the
acid directly into waiting vessels. This first shipment is on its
way to Turkey to which 25,000 to 30,000 tons will be exported by
year's end.

I Hitched Myself Unto a Star

Man cannot utter it,
The eye is not satisfied with seeing,
Nor the ear filled with hearing.—
Ecclesiastes. 1:8
By NOAH E. ARONSTAM, M.D.
I hitched myself unto a star
In the Infinite;
But with the violence of a thousand thunders
I was hurled down a seething maelstrom—
Which we mortals designate as Being—
A nebulous bit of doubt and query,
Whose Time begins
And dies into Eternity;
Where Existence is an Illusion
Gigantic, dreary;
Where the mind staggers
In a futile effort to grasp the riddle—
And then with a bitter cry
It raises its voice to the Unknown:

Of wraiths and phantoms
In a macabre dance
Of recurring Birth and Death.
Ask no more of Me!
Naught of naughts
All is Naught."

tional institutions and organi-
zations have not been met in
proportion to the tasks imposed
on them, and Jewish communal
fund-raising agencies through-
out the country must give these
institutions more adequate and
effective support, it was declared
in a resolution adopted by 1,-
000 delegates representing
schools, communities, syna-
gogues and national Jewish or-
ganizations at the Second Na-
tional Conference on Jewish
Education.
The delegates called upon or-
ganized Jewish communities
throughout the country to es-
tablish centers for experimen-
tation in order to improve the
quality of Jewish education.
They urged that the national
advisory council of the Ameri-
can Association for Jewish Edu-
cation establish a special group
composed of representatives
from all ideological and religi-
ous groupings to work specifi-
cally on improving the quality
of Jewish education.
Stressing the importance of
participation of parents in the
educational process, the dele-
gates called upon the American
Association for Jewish Educa-
tion to form a national associa-
tion of all Jewish school parent-
teacher groups, with competent
professional direction. They also
urged the organization of a na-
tional council on adult Jewish
education to stimulate, organize
and develop programs and ma-
terials throughout the country.

$20,000,000 Loan to
United Jewish Appeal
Praeger's New Book Is

NEW YORK, (JTA)—A group
of seven New York banks has
granted a loan of $20,000,000 to
the United Jewish Appeal of
Greater New York, it was an-
nounced by New York UJA
treasurer Samuel D. Leidesdorf.
Mr. Leidesdorf said that the UJA
envisages the loan as a five-
year program. It is to start with
a two-year loan which may be
reviewed annually looking to-
wards the extension of the loan
over five years.
The loan is part of a nation-
wide program undertaken by the
national United Jewish Appeal
to borrow $75,000,000 for a period
of five years from Jewish com-
munity chests and welfare funds
throughout the country in order
to accelerate the absorption of
immigrants in Israel and speed
the country's agricultural de-
velopment. At the same time,
the loan project will have the
indirect effect of making avail-
able the hard currency required
by Israel's treasury to consoli-
date its short-term debt.
