Mathematicia'n Gets Wide Acclaim

Prof. Jekuthiel Ginsburg of Yeshiva University and his mathe-
matical achievements are the subjects of articles appearing in
newspapers and magazines throughout the world. Prof. Ginsburg's
efforts to humanize the teaching of mathematics have recently
been discussed in magazines in England, Greece, Switzerland,
France, Germany and especially in our own country. Yeshiva's
Detroit graduates and a large co-sponsoring committee are ar-
ranging a testimonial dinner, Tuesday evening, March 30, at the
Tuller Hotel, in honor of the Yeshiva's president, Dr. Samuel
Belkin.

Communists Exploit
Anti-McCarthyism

By MILTON FRIEDMAN

(Copyright, 1954, JTA, Inc.)

1

WASHINGTON — The "Daily
Worker" and other Communist
publications this month inad-
vertently revealed that Commu-
nists are seeking to exploit pop-
ular feeling against "McCarthy-
ism" and the McCarran-Walter
Act by an all-out campaign to
infiltrate activities by reputable
groups against "McCarthyism"
and the McCarran-Walter Act.
Communist Party Chairman
William Z. Foster and other top
Reds, on behalf of the National
Committee of the Communist
Party, published a "Draft Pro-
gram of the Communist Party"
in the "Daily Worker" on March
7. In a call for "a popular coali-
tion movement," an "alliance"
was demanded with a role desig-
nated for "nationality groups."
Jewish organizations have long
been alert to the Communist
conspiracy. Groups proven to be
Communist, though few in num-
ber, have been expelled from
community councils. Today,
however, the Communists have
seized on "McCarthyism," the
McCarran-Walter Act, and other
issues which have engendered
genuine concern among many
loyal Americans. The Red tac-
tics are such that legitimate
popular action is undermined;
not only do citizens' groups have
to wage a trying fight against
right-wing extremists but they
find themselves harassed by the
necessity of evading simultane-
ous stabs in the back from Com-
munists.
Knowing of the distaste for
"McCarthyism" which is shared
even by President Eisenhower,
the Communists exploit the pub-
lic temper. Those who speak out
against Communism are labelled
"McCarthyites." They are ac-
cused of cringing before the
Congressional investigating com-
mittees whose tactics have
earned the contempt of the na-
tion. Those who oppose the ex-
treme left as well as the extreme
right are said by the Reds to be
"cleansing" themselves or "ap-
peasing."
The C
mun is ts have de-
nounced Jewish organizations
for opposing Communism,
branding even the most dis-
tinguished groups as "McCarthy-
ite." This is done despite the
fact that it is demonstrably true
that Jewish groups are in the
forefront of the struggle for pre-
serving traditional civil liberties.

Israel Merchant Fleet
Only Second to Turkey

NEW YORK, (JTA) — Israel
now has the second largest mer-
chant marine in the Near East,
second only to Turkey. The
Israeli merchant fleet has 31
ships—from two to 40 years
old—grossing 160,000 tons.
At present the Israel govern-
ment has four ships under con-
struction in German shipyards
and has assigned the equivalent
of $9,000,000 from German re-
parations to these ships. The
ships will be resold to three
Israeli shipping companies. More
ships are expected to be built
from German reparations.
Israel's shipping now is the
second highest foreign currency
earner, second only to the citrus
exports. It was the need to con-
serve foreign currency, coupled
with the isolation of the country
resulting from the Arab block-
ade, which forced Israel to ex-
pand its shipping industry.

TEL AVIV, (JTA)—The Tel
Aviv Municipal Council voted to
ban the sale of pork within the
boundaries of the city. This de-
cision follows similar action
taken by most of the Jewish
municipalities in Israel.
Several months ago the Israel
Parliament approved regulations
according to which the breeding
of pigs is allowed only in the
region of Nazareth, which is
populated by Christians. Pork
is prohibited under the Moslem
religion as well as under the
