AJC, ADL Bolt
Southern Council

HOUSTON, Tex. (JTA) — Ac-
tion by the American Jewish
Committee and the Anti-Defa-
mation League of Bnai Brith in
announcing their withdrawal
from the Southwest Jewish
Community Relations Council
and their intention to establish
region offices brought demands
that the two national agencies
reconsider the situation.
The Texas State Association of
Bnai Brith, which met at Gal-
veston last 'Sunday, adopted a
resolution calling on the na-
tional office of the ADL to re-
consider its action.
Resolutions adopted by the
Jewish community organizations
in Ardmore, Fort Worth and
Houston, expressed concern over
the action of the two national
agencies, called for continuation
of the tristate council and urged
the two agencies to reconsider.
A resolution by the Fort
Worth Jewish Federation said
that the action of the two agen-
cies would result in "useless du-
plication."

German Stamp Honor;
Prof. Paul Ehrlich

BONN, (JTA)—To mark the
100th birthday of Prof. Paul
Ehrlich, the great scientist
who won the Nobel Prize for
discovering s a l v a r s a n, the
West German Post Office will
issue a special 10-pfennig
postage stamp in an edition
of ten million.
Considered the found-
ing father of chemotherapy,
Prof. Ehrlich was the first
unconverted German Jew to
win the Nobel prize. He was
interested in Jewish affairs
throughout his life and is
buried in an honor tomb in
Frankfurt's Jewish cemetery.
The new stamp shows his
profile, together with that of
a non-Jewish friend born one
day apart in 1954, Emil von
Behring, the creator of the
tetanus antitoxin and the
diptheria serum.

3-Day German Fete
FRANKFURT, (JTA)-
President Theodor Heuss of
West Germany presided at
the opening of the three-day
celebration here marking the
100th anniversary of the birth
of Prof. Ehrlich. Leaders in
Jewish life, German scientists
and others gathered in the
Frankfurt Jewish cemetery to
pay tribute to Prof. Ehrlich.
Contrary to the custom of
many Jews who achieved
academic standing in Ger-
many, Prof. Ehrlich refused
to accept conversion to Chris-
tianity and became the first
German Jew to receive the
Nobel Prize. He was active
in Jewish affairs and served
on a committee for the Nor-
dau institute in Palestine, en-
visioned as the predecessor of
the Hebrew University.
