Vear Boys- and Girls:
Today is Purim.
Purim is a time for masquer-

an anti- Semite
who tried to de-
stroy the Jews of
his time, in Per-
sia.
Like all anti-

such instances, VP-
the courage of the Mordecais and
the Esthers of the Purim story
triumphed over bigotry.
I hope all of you will have
'Fur ijn parties—in your schools
and ' in your homes—and that
you will arrange masquerades.
Today's column should help
you understand and appreci-

THE STORY OF PURIM

The story of Purim is told in
the Book of Esther which is read
In synagogues on Purim eve-
ning and Purim morning.
According to the Book of
Esther, a grave disaster threat-
ened the Jewish people who
dwelt in the provinces of Persia
and Media. At that time Aha-
suerus was King of Persia. He
selected Esther, the • beautiful
cousin of Mordecai as the suc-
cessor to his Queen Vashti,
•whom he had deposed because
she had refused to obey one of
his commands. Mordecai was a
wealthy Jew of Shushan, but
Ahasuerus did not know that
Esther was his relative, nor that
Esther was of Jewish origin. At
that time, too, Haman, the Aga-
gite, became grand vizier of Per-
sia. He hated Mordecai, and be-
cause of Mordecai he hated all
Jews and sought their utter de-
struction.
To carry out his vicious plan
against the Jews of Persia, he
told Ahasuerus that the Jews
were a dangerous element in the
empire and that their annihi-
lation would establish the unity
and security of all the provinces.
He promised to pay into the
treasury 10,000 silver talents for
the permission to pillage and
exterminate the Jewish popula-

Lion of Persia and Media. Ac-
cording to the Book of Esther,
Haman did not tell Ahasuerus
that it was the Jewish people
that he sought to destroy. The
king then issued a proclamation
ordering the confiscation of all
Jewish property and the annihi-
lation of all Jews.
The Jews of Shushan-L-the
capital of Persia—fasted and
prayed. Mordecai beseeched
Esther to plead with her royal
spouse for her people. Esther I
feared for her own life; but af-
ter an inner struggle, she in-
vited Ahasuerus and Haman to
a banquet. At the banquet she
fell before the king and declar-
ed that it was her own people
that Haman sought to annihi-
late. Whereupon the king arose
in great anger, and ordered Ha-
man to be hanged. The evil de-
cree, however, could not be re-
voked, for it bore the seal of the
King. But he issued a counter
decree, giving the Jews the right
"to stand up for their lives and
destroy all that would assault
them." In this way, Esther sav-
ed her people from destruction;
and in commemoration of her
heroism, the Feast of Purim was
instituted which tht Jewish peo-
ple celebrate every year with joy
and festivity.

MEYER'S MASQUERADE
By Elma Ehrlich Levinger
David, David, come and see
What my Mother made for me:
Funny suit of red and green,
Funniest hat you've ever seen!
Won't I be the queerest sight,
When I sing tomorrow night:
"Heint is Purim, morgen is ois
Git mir a groshen, und varft mir

I shall be a jolly jester;
Sister Ruth will dress as Esther;

And shining things upOn , her

And Sam is Haman—Dave, his
nose
Will be a foot long, I suppose.
Come and mask on Purim night!
Mother'll help you dress right.
You can be a Persian king,
Soldier, slaves, or anything;
Buy a mask and come alOng,
And help us sing our Purim

UNITED NATIONS, N.Y.—Op-
position on the part of major
Jewish organizations to the idea
that only a state can bring .
complaint against another state
if the latter violates the provi-
sions of the Covenant on Hu-
man Rights was expressed here
Tuesday by Moses Moskowitz,
representative of the Consulta-
tive Council of Jewish Organ-
izations at the United Nations
Economic and Social Commis-
sion.
The Consultative Council is
composed of the Anglo-Jewish
Association, American Jewish
Committee and Alliance Israelite
Universelle.
Moskowitz told the Commis-
sion on Human Rights: "If the
right of a complaint is restricted
to the state, how can the inter-
national community act as pro-
tector of the covenanted rights?
Suppose there is a conspiracy
of silence among the states, and
none of them invokes the cove-
nant even in the face of most
grievous violations, is there any
way in which the international
community can step in and re-
mind the states of their obliga-
tions?"
Moskowitz said the answer to
the questions was in the nega-
tive.' He pointed out that hu-
man rights, which could not be
asserted, were of little conse-
quence. The representative of
the Consultative Council sup-
ported the proposal for the cre-
ation of an office of United Na-
tions Attorney General or High
Commissioner for HUman Rights.
He said that such an office
would mean that the interna-
tional community could exercise
its function as protector of the
covenanted rights.

Local Groups Support - Nationeil Hebrew Month

Hebrew Month, sponsored by
the Histadruth Ivrith of Amer-
ica, has become a popular in-
stitution in American, Jewish
life. It will be observed through-
out the land from Purim to
Passover.
The purpose of Hebrew Month
is to advance the cause of the
Hebrew language and culture
within every sphere of Jewish
life and also to promote specific
Hebraic activities.
Sen. Herbert H. Lehman in a
statement issued in connection
with the observance said, "It is
important that men in every
field know Hebrew as they do
other modern languages. The
revitalization of Hebrew which
the Histadruth Ivrith of Ameri-
ca is furthering will contribute
to the enhancement of our cul-
tural life . . ."
Abba S. Eban, Israel Ambassa-
dor to the U.S., in a similar
statement, said, "The Hebrew
language is an indispensable in-
strument of world Jewish unity.
