Purim Plans Dominate Local Scene

Slate Holiday Celebrations

Purim, celebrating the deliv-
erance of the Jews from the
sinister Haman in ancient Per-
sia, will be celebrated, beginning
Thursday evening and continu-
ing through Friday and Satur-
day, March 19 and 20.
Besides the reading of the
Megillah, the traditional Book
of Esther, in our synagogues,
community schools and organ-
izations have planned a num-
ber of special celebrations. To
aid in organizational planning,
the Jewish Community Council,
through its cultural commis-
sion, has available a kit of
songs, games, carnival ideas and
a skit which is available by
writing the Council, 803 Wash-
ington Blvd. Bldg., Detroit 26.
Planning Purim activities are
the f allowing synagogues,
schools and social groups:
Beth Aaron Synagogue
Purim services will begin at
p.m., Thursday, and continue
with the reading of the Megillah
at 7 a.m., Friday. Sigmund Schey
will lead in the reading. Noise-
makers will be distributed to
children for participation in this
merry-making celebration.
Special childrens' services will
be held at 4 p.m. and 5:15 p.m.,
Thursday, under auspices of the
religious school and. its princi-
pal, Alex Roberg.
Late services at . 8:30 p.m.,
March 19, will be conducted. by
the Sisterhood and dedicated to
the celebration of Purim. Un-
der the direction of Mrs. Sidney
Weinberg, president, and Mrs.
Adolph Winkler, program chair-
man, Sisterhood members will
participate. Rabbi Benjamin H.
Gorrelick will . preach. on "The
Joy of Personal Redemption."
Beth Shalom Synagogue
Formerly known as Oak Park
Synagogue, Beth Shalom will
hold Purim services at 7 p.m.,
Thursday, in the Tyler School,
W. Lincoln and Tyler. Children
of the religious school will par-
ticipate jointly , with their par-
ents, and will. receive groggers
and noisemakers in celebration.
Children are urged to dress in
costumes, and prizes will be
awarded. , •
Congregation ,Bnai Moshe
Two assemblies are planned to
accommodate all religious school
pupils at celebrations this Sun-
day, in the synagogue social
hall. No special prizes will be
awarded, but children with ori-
ginal costumes will have their
names inscribed in the syna-
gogue's Purim Golden Book. All
neighborhood , children are in-
vited.
Congregation Bnai Israel
Rabbi Israel Flam will lecture
on "The Significance of Purim"
at a meeting of the congrega-
tion's Men's Club at 8:30 p.m.,
Tuesday, in the synagogue, 12650
Linwood. The community is in-
vited. The Megillah will be read
at 7:15 p.m., Thursday, and
morning services start at 7 a.m.,
March 19.
Congregation Beth Abraham
The annual . Purim show for
religious school pupils and their
parents will be held at 11 a.m.,
March 21, in the synagogue.
School departments will be in-
troduced by Rabbi Israel I. Hal-
pern, and the educational board
will serve refreshments. Megil-
lah services will be held at 6:30
p.m., Thursday, and 7:30 a.m.,
March 19.
. Congregation Mishkan Israel
The traditional Purim cele-
bration will take the form of a
music festival, with talks by
special guests featured on the
program, to be held at 8 p.m.,
March 21, in the synagogue so-

Workmen's Circle
Two programs, one on March
19 by the Circle school, and the
other on March 20, under aus-
pices of Branch 227, will be held
to celebrate the holiday. Both
events will be held in the Circle

Young Zionist Club '
A social evening and Purim
party is planned for 8:45 p.m.
Wednesday, in the Zionist

Jewish Parents' Institute
The sixth annual Purimshpiel,
entitled "Miss Me Mate," a take-
off on the Broadway show "Kiss
Me Kate," will be presented at
9 p.m., March 20, in the Davison
Jewish Center. A singing group
of 12 and a chorus of eight will
headline the show, which was
written by the Institute's drama
group. The production is co-
directed by Ruth Seligson and
Bob Molnar, with Betty Plavnick
in charge of music and Sylvia
Barr accompanist. Admission

Charles E. Feinberg Goes on Whitman

Charles E. Feinberg, noted

nationally known as an author-

the possessor of some of the
most valuable Whitman manu-
scripts, left on Wednesday for
England to participate in an ex-
hibit of Whitman's works and
manuscripts at the U. S. Infor-

Embassy, at 41 Grosvenor, Lon-
don.
Mr. Feinberg, who is making
the trip under the auspices of the
U. S. State Department, will lec-
ture in England on Whitman.
He also will visit France where
he will present a valuable or-
