Lipkin to Appear
Sensibar Describes
Huleh. Drainage Work I On Telephone Hour

AMONG HIS LARGE fund of
stories, Robert Merrill, Met Op-
era star who sings here March
7, at Temple Israel, tells Julius
Chajes one of his favorites about
the opera star who had prom-
ised to sing a role for a well-
known charity . . The audito-
rium was sold out . . . Two min-
utes before curtain time, the
singer walked to the chairman
in charge of the affair and de-
manded immediately $1,000 in
cash or else he wouldn't go on
.. . The harried chairman re-
minded the singer of his agree-
ment to sing for nothing, but to
no avail . • In desperation he
ran to the box office, got $1,000
in cash and handed it to the
singer who then went out on
stage and in the parlance of
show business, killed the audi-
ence . .. As he walked off to a
tumultous ovation he reached in
his pocket and handed back to
the chairman the $1,000 "Oh
I don't want the money," he
said to the surprised gent, "but
boy, can I sing with $1,000 in
my pocket!"

THEY'RE STARTING 'em
young these days . . . what with
the song, "DiamondS Are a Girl's
Best Friend" being the theme
title of the Diamond Club . . .
organized by five youthful stu-
dents in the 7B class at Post
Intermediate . . . Composed of
Madelon Klunover, president,
Diane Rosen, Linda Shaw, Jo-
anne Rosenthal and Maryann
Kyte, the little lassies are all
only 12 years old ... The group's
first project was to make
clothespin dolls for the Chil-
dren's Hospital .

SOME OF US, WHEN things
are going well, are inclined to
take a little too much personal
credit . . . We overlook the help
we've had along the way . . .
In that respect, we're a good
deal like the old Negro that
prominent Windsor printer and
lecturer, Mike Sumner, tells
about . . This energetic old
fellow had taken over a vacant
lot packed with weeds, tin cans,
rubbish, etc., and after months
of hard work, made a garden
spot of it . . . The preacher,
looking over the fence, was much
impressed . .. "Rufus," he said,
appreciatively, "de Lawd and
you has done a wondahful job
here" ... "Yas, sah," said Rufus
meditatively. "Yas, sah, but you
should a' seen dis heah place
when de Lawd was takin' care
ob it Hissel."

WHILE ON A RECENT lec-
ture tour, S u m n e r, who stud-
ied to be a rabbi, told that
in the English and American
colony of business exiles at Ti-
entsin, China, the visit of the
Episcopal bishop is an out-
standing social event . . Not
long since, his eminence did a
certain household the honor of
•dining in its company . . . The
Chinese cook was duly impress-
ed with the importance of the
occasion and was stimulated to
do his best . . . He responded
nobly . .. The menu was all that
the most exacting ecclesiastic
could have desired, but the top
notch of achievement came with
the dessert . . . the piece de re-
sistance a magnificent frosted
cake on the surface of which
the chef had embossed these
words: "Hurrah for God!"

Huleh drainage work, under-
taken in Israel by the Jewish
National Fund and directed by
Jacob L. Sensibar, world famous
figure in earth moving, was ex-
plained to the Detroit Technion
Society, Feb. 17, at a meeting
at the Rackham Building.
A gathering of engineering,
technical men and their friends
heard Mr. Sensibar's description
of a task for the draining of
44,000 acres of swamps, through
a series of canals.
In the course of his address,
Mr. Sensibar showed how this
drainage project will increase
the amount of cultivatable land
in Israel and will help the coun-
try reach a stage of providing
its own food, thereby speeding
the time when it will be self-
sufficient.
As a result of•such efforts, Mr.
Sensibar said, the cost of food
imports into Israel dropped from
$74,000,000 in ,1952 to $59,000,000
in 1953.
Mr. Sensibar, who is head of
the Construction Aggregates
Corporation, a score of whose
engineers went 1;0 Israel to con-
duct the Huleh drainage work,
was introduced at the Technion
meeting here by Jules Lev.
