fred M. Lilienthal, anti-Zionist
propagandist and former Wash-

pamphlet "The Planners and the
Plan," which describes an al-

ism as a political program which_
demands the allegiance of
American Jews to Israel. He
urged that United States foreign
. policy halt its "most favored
treatment" of Israel and sup-
port Arab claims to prevent
their defection to Soviet Russia.

DAVID SAFRAN Presents Record of Detroit Bond Purchasers
to Mrs. JUDITH EPSTEIN as PHILLIP STOLLMAN looks on.
Israel bonds in the amount of
$243,000 were purchased by the
more 4,500 people who nearly
filled the Masonic Auditorium
to capacity Sunday night, at the
celebration of Jerusale m's
3,000th anniversary.
David Safran presented Mrs.
Judith Epstein, former national
president of Hadassah and a
world Zionist leader, with a re-
cord of all Detroit bond pur-
chasers to be kept in the Israel
archives.
An array of speakers outlined
Jerusalem's history and the im-
portance of the Holy City as the
capital of Israel.
In her stirring address, Mrs.
Epstein described the develop-
ment of the New City of Jeru-
salem and the manner in
which the Old City has been
walled in. "The Crusaders'
Wall is a symbol of the resis-
tance to the outside world and
to the hopes of the future." In
contrast to the shells in which
the Arabs live in the Old City,
Mrs. Epstein described the
progress of the Jewish quar-
ters where new industries are
being built with the aid of
the Israel bond issues.
Rabbi Mordecai Kirshblum,
the other guest speaker at the
gathering, reviewed the varied
names given to Jerusalem—City
of Holiness, City of Truth, City
of Peace, City of God. He de-
scribed the fine results of
the Israel bond drives in which
600,000 people have thus far
subscribed $141,000,000. He took
occasion, in his review of exist-
ing conditions in the Middle
East, to protest against any ef-
fort to arm the Arabs at the
expense of Israel's security.
In his report on the results
of the Jerusalem anniversary
Israel bond drive, Mr. Safran
pointed out that Israel's ene-
mies are anxious to see a de-
cline in the morale of the
Jewish state and that the
chief weapon in Israel's de-
fense is the retention of faith
and courage that will help up-
hold the hands of the state's
builders. He made a strong ap-
peal for continued support of
the bond drive and for con-
stant purchases of Israel
bonds by American Jews.
Detroiters who participated in
the program included, in addi-
tion to Mr. Safran, Phillip Stoll-
man, chairman of the celebra-
tion; Louis Berry, who presided
at the meeting; Rabbi Leon
Fram, Max Osnos, Rabbi Isaac
Stollman, Rabbi Jacob E. Segal.
Mr. Osnos introduced Gover-
nor G. Mennen Williams, who
greeted the gathering in the
name of the state of Michigan.
The musical program was
given by the eminent Metro-
politan Opera star, Jan Peerce,
who was accompanied by
Werner Bass. Mr. Peerce's
program included Julius Cha-
jes' "Adarim." The guest
singer took occasion to praise
Mr. Chajes' works and called
on him for a bow.
Under the leadership of Dan
Frohman, with Mrs. Frohman at
the piano, the Cantors' Choir
sang a group of songs to open
the program.
