ly unbeaten basketball entry in
the Intercongregational Basket-
ball League was upset this week
by Temple Beth El, 40 to 34.
Beth El now moves into a first
place tie with Bnai Moshe.
In other games, Adas Shalom
tied Shaarey Zedek, 17 to 17,
and Bnai David handed Temple
Israel its fourth defeat, 36 to 14.

On Yiddish Dictionary

This quotation from the Ethics
of the Fathers was emblazoned
on a resolution presented laSt
Week at a meeting of the board
of the United Hebrew Schools to
Maurice H. Zackheim, in recog-
nition of his long years "of de-
voted service to the Schools."
Incorporated into the reso-
lution was the naming of Mr.
Zackheim to the lifetime honor-
ary chairmanship of the board
of education of the Schools.
The resolution noted M r .
Zackheim's service as a member
of the board for almost 30 years,
during which time he served as
president (1929 to 1931) and
Chairman of the board of edu-
Cation since 1926.
Calling attention to his know-
ledge of the Bible and post-
Biblical literature, the resolution
expressed appreciation for Mr.
Zackheim's great contributions
to the scholarship of the com-
munity and his ability to guide
and serve as consultant to teach-
ers in the Schools:
The resolution, signed by Abe
Kasle, president, and Dr. Alex-
ander W. Sanders, secretary of
the Hebrew Schools, was pre-
sented to Mr. Zackheim as a
memento of his service to the
eause of Jewish education in
Detroit.

The spring session of the
Young Israel Adult Institute will
Open at 8 p.m., Wednesday, in
young Israel Center, announced
Dr. Hugo Mandelbaum, chair-
Man of the adult education
committee.
The following courses are open
to the community at large:
Jewish history by Dr. Max
Kapustin; elementary prayer
and Bible by Rabbi Abraham
Zentman; the Haftorah of the
week (study of the prophets) by
Dr. Mandelbaum; and Jewish
:family life (preparation for
marriage) by Rabbi Samuel H.
Prero.
Regular weekly classes in Tal-
mud by Rabbi Leib Bakst and in
Churnash and Rashi by Rabbi
Prero will be continued.
On Feb. 19,. the Institute will
sponsor a lecture on the histori-
cal background and meaning of
blessings in Jewish life by Rabbi
Chaim Shloss, instructor in Tal-
mud at the Yeshivath Beth
Yeh udah.

da to assume his duties again

Congregation.

Work has commenced toward
the end result of publishing a
Great Dictionary of the Yiddish
Language, which is being under-
taken by a board of directors
headed by Judah A. Joffe, one
of the long-time Yiddish lingu-
ists.
Working with YIVO (Yiddish
Scientific Institute), the publi-
cation is expected to take five
or six years in the development
stage and needs the help of lin-
guists, scholars and financial
benefactors. YIVO headquarters
are at 535 W. 123rd, New York,
N. Y.
The lexicon envisions the
greatest collection of Yiddish
words and phrases yet amassed
in the nearly 1,000-year-old his-
tory of the language. In addi-
tion to the first volume of a
Yiddish-Yiddish dictionary ,
plans are being made for the
publication of Yiddish-English,
Yiddish-Hebrew and Yiddish-
Spanish dictionaries.

Oak Park Synagogue Plans
Cabaret Night and Dance

A cabaret-style night is plan-
ned for members of the Oak
Park synagogue, it was an-
nounced this week by Seymour
Tarnoff, one of the chairmen.
Featured will be a sweetheart
dance, food, prizes, entertain-
ment and a special exhibition by
Juan and Shirley Ispano of
Spanish and ballroom dancing.

The Men's Club of the Con-
gregation Shaarey Zedek will
hold its annual Brotherhood
Night Friday, Feb: 19, 8 p.m., in
the main auditorium of the
synagogue.
The program will begin with
a religious service under the di-
rection of Rabbi Morris Adler,
with liturgical music by Cantor
Jacob Sonenklar and choir.
The speakers will be Rabbi
Adler, Dr. Walton E. Cole, of the
First Congregational Church,
Rev, Arthur E. Lovely, S.J., of
the University of Detroit facul-
ty, and Rev. Robert L. Bradby,
Jr., of Greater King Solomon
Baptist Church.
• Non-Jewish guests will be
taken on a guided tour of the
synagogue. Refreshments will be
served by the Sisterhood. All are
invited.
Dr. Albert '3". Altman will be
chairman. Members of his corn-
mittee are Arthur M. Lang, Ben
Davidson and Abe Katzman.

Ben Weiss Awarded Seminary Citation

Dr. MAX ARZT, vice-chancellor of the Jewish Theological
Seminary of America, is shown presenting a citation to BEN
WEISS, chairman of the Seminary affairs committee of Cong.
Bnai Moshe. Presentation was made at a brunch campaign meet-
ing at the home of Theodore M. Curtis, co-chairman of the Detroit

SZ Young Married League Plans Mystery Skit and Tour

The Young Married League of
Cong. Shaarey Zedek has
planned an evening of• mystery
and excitement for its meeting
at 8:30 p.m., Wednesday, in the
synagogue social hall.

A mystery skit will be pre-
sented by the membership, and
a conducted tour of tie syna-
gogue building will follow. A so-
cial hour will conclude the eve-
ning.

service at Cong. Bnai Moshe on
Feb. 12 will honor the youth of
the Synagogue. Participating
groups will be the synagogue's
boy Scout Troop 23, the Junior
Congregation and the Bar Mitz-
vah Club.
Rabbi Moses Lehrman will
preach on "If I Forget Thee, 0
Jerusalem." Cantor David Katz-
man will chant the service, be-
binning 8:15 p.m. A tea in the
