As American Jewish Committee Head;
Lauds President Bayer of Turkey

Turkey has no minorities and
no discrimination because of
race, faith or language, Presi-
dent Celal Bayar of Turkey told
more than 300 leaders of Ameri-
can Jewry during a reception
in his honor Sunday by the
American Jewish Committee in
the Savoy Plaza Hotel, New
York.
specially designed silver
medalion to commemorate the
Turkish statesman's visit to the
United States was presented to
President Bayar, in behalf of the
American Jewish Committee, by
Jacob Blaustein of Baltimore, re-
tiring AJC president.
"The secular Republic of
Turkey has separated the
church from the state," Pres-
ident Bayar declared, "and,
according to the modern con-
ception of nationality, looks
upon a nation as a product of
common culture and common
ideals. This conception, which
is in line with the thinking of
you Americans, no longer
leaves room for the concep-
tion of a 'minority' within a
large nation. Elements bear-.
ing a distinction of faith or
race within a given nation are
not to be considered as a sub-
ject of disunion of discrimina-
tiOn but rather as connecting
links serving to create closer
and firming ties between that
nation and other nations."
He said that Turkey has al-
ways been a haven for the op-
pressed, pointing out that at
the end of the 15th century, "in
the fanatically intolerant world
of that day" Jews _emigrating
aboard Turkish ships, found
Turkey a land where freedom
of conscience was assured. He
added that in recent history
"Turkey did not fail promptly
to offer asylum to Jewish men
of science and learning who fled
from persecution elsewhere."
Presiding at the reception,
attended by many notables,
was Irving M. Engel of New
York, newly-elected president
of the American Jewish Com-
mittee who succeeded Mr.
Blaustein only a few hours
earlier at the closing session
of the AJC's 47th annual
meeting.
Mr. Engel saluted President
Bayar as "an outstanding states-
'man of the free
world, a great
friend of our
country, and a
man who has
repeatedly dem-
onstrated this
understanding
of and his de-

Portrait of War Hero Bale Unveiled
In Ceremony of Jewish Veterans

More than 200 people gathered
at the Davison Jewish Center
Sunday afternoon for the un-
veiling of the portrait of the
late war hero, Pfc. Joseph L.
Bale, who was awarded the Dis-
tinguished Service Cross for
heroism in World War II.
Among the distinguished
guests were Gov. Williams, Sena-
tor Charles E. Potter, Council-
men Eugene I. Van Antwerp, Ed-
ward Connor and Nathaniel
Goldstick, assistant corporation
counsel, who delivered the main
address.
Gov. Williams declared "Had
it not been for the sacrifice of
heroes, like the one we honor
today, we might not be able to
enjoy the things we do. May the
good Lord give us the 'same de-
votion to duty as those men who
gave so much."
Sen. Potter, himself a wound-
ed veteran, stated "Today we

relive the supreme sacrifice
made by a fellow citizen. Pvt.
Bale is no longer with us, but
his influence will long be with
us. He is our challenge to a bet-
ter life."
Goldstick said "Joseph Bale's
life was given for the liberation
of mankind; for recognition of
the rights and dignity of man.
We, as Jews and Americans, have
no right to indulge in the lux-
ury of intolerance. In our own,.--
daily lives there are things we
can do to -reduce prejudice and
bias to an irreducable minimum.
"Those of us who resent bias
against ourselves should resent
bias against anyone. If we follow
this, Bale's life will not have
been in vain."
Following the main address,
the portrait of Pfc. Bale, killed
in France in 1945, was unveiled
by Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Bale,
their son and daughter-in-law,
