stamps. Tell them their effort is greatly appreciated," Mr. Cottler
commented upon accepting the contribution.

Plant 600 Trees

In celebration of Hamisha
Asar b'Shvat, children of the
United Hebrew Schools have
planted over 600 trees in Israel.
The trees were bought by the
children from their own con-
tributions in honor or in mem-
ory of loved ones.
The children contributed for
the trees out of their allowances
and the money was collected by
the teachers in the classrooms.
The whole tree planting activ-
ity is part of the United Hebrew
Schools program of training the
children in their responsibility
for the building of Israel.
On Sunday, a meeting of
Keren Ami repersentatives of
each of the United Hebrew
School branches will meet at the
Rose Sittig Cohen Buidling to
report on the program in their
branch.
The children themselves de-
cide which agencies and institu-
tions will receive allocations
from the Keren Ami funds. Na-
tional educational a g e n ci e s,
children's organizations, and in-
stitutions in Israel receive allo-
cations from the Keren Ami in
addition to the Allied Jewish
Campaign in Detroit.
Sunday's meeting will be for
the purpose of conducting pre-
campaign budgeting by the chil-
dren.

4th of Histadrut
250,000 Goal Raised
Here; Rally Feb. 7

Entering the second week of
the drive for $250.000 canvassers
and delegates who attended the
first Histadrut campaign rally
at the Labor Zionist Institute
last Sunday received the heart-
warming report that their efforts
had brought the campaign with-
in sight of the quarter-way
mark.
Dr. Eliezer Schechter, secre-
tary of the Tel Aviv Labor
Council and member of the Tel
Aviv 11,Itinicipal Council, cur-
rently in Detroit, addressed the
assembly. He painted out that
the Jewish community in Pales-
tine at the close of World War
II accepted the obligations of
statehood, fought a murderous
war in defense of that statehood
and immediately after, before
the dust had settled to the
ground accepted a third obliga-
tion—that of "Kibutz Galiut,"
the ingathering of the exiles.
"All that they ask in return,"
stated Dr. Schechter, "is a little
more patience and a little more
understanding."
The active campaigners' list
this week is a typical cross sec-
tion of the entire campaign, in-
-eluding as it does Mrs. E. Fleish
of Eastern Ladies Society, Mrs.
Ethel Krieger of Pioneer Wom-
en, Messrs, Jack Glazer, Bernard
Linderman and Mrs. E. Freed-
man of the Poale Zion Division,
A. Wineman and A. Goldberg of
Landsmanschaft D i v i s i o n, P.
Ulanoff, M. Abrams, H. Schumer,
Mrs. P. Jaffe and Sol Liptzen of
Farband Division. Peter Gold-
stein, member of the Israel
bonds board of governors, vice-
chairman of the Histadrut cam-
paign, and active in a number

of local organizations, will dedi-
cate the next several weeks to
the Histadrut campaign.
The next campaign rally will
take place Sunday, Feb. 7, 2 p.m.,
in the Labor Zionist Institute.
This event will be in conjunc-
tion with a National Roll Call
Rally to take place simultan-
eously in New York. Represent-
ing Detroit at this 'troll call of
the cities" will be Harry Schu-
mer, who will present Detroit's
second transmission of funds
this season to the national offi-
cers.
Guest speaker at the Feb. 7
event will be Kieve Skidell,
young ex-Canadian who is now

a member of the American Ki-
butz Kfar Blum. Mr. Skidell is
presently on a temporary as-
signment in America, occupying
the desk of the director of the
Jewish Agency's Youth Depart-
ment.

JERI TSALEM

The 3000th anniversary' of the rise of Jerusalem represents more than a
dimension either in space or time. Jerusalem is the symbol of Jewish survival,
its dream of messianic fulfillment and its embodiment of all the sacred and
the eternal. It is the cradle of judaism and of the faiths that sprang from it.
There, King David established a Kingdom, Solomon built a Temple and the
prophets forged the instruments of peace, justice and freedom.
Removed from its soil, the Jew had never forgotten its spiritual impact.
Through the centuries, he prayed for the restoration of Jerusalem and its
former glory. Today, as in days of yore, Jerusalem serves again as the seat
of a reborn State of Israel, though all of us look forward to the day when its
status will be a peaceful and recognized one. It is for us, symbol of the Law
that came out of Zion and the word of God that came out of Jerusalem.
A sacred duty devolves upon every Jew to participate in this significant
and sacred celebration, to the fullest measure of his ability; ever mindful of
the pledge our forefathers had made by the rivers of Babylon as they longed
to return to their homeland: •

"If I forget these, 0 Jerusalem,
Let my right hand forget her cunning.
Let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth,
If I remember thee not;
If I set not Jerusalem .
Above my chiefest joy." •
