Selection of Synagogues
Left to Holland Wives

AMSTERDAM, (JTA)-A 100-
year concordat was signed here
giving Jewish women the right
to select their own synagogues.
Husbands, Sephardic or Ashke-
nazi, may adopt the synagogue
of their wives under the new
agreement which will have to be
ratified by Queen Juliana.
The concordat puts an end to
an agreement concluded in 1810
between the Ashkenazi and
Sephardic Jews in the Nether-
lands which made the syna-
gogue of the husband that of his
wife and children. Thus, wives
of Sephardic husbands became
members of Sephardic syna-
gogues even though they were
brought up in Ashkenazi fami-
lies.

Political Offensive At UN by Israel

By DAVID HOROWITZ
UNITED NATIONS, N.Y.-The
Security Council, meeting on the
Syrian complaint against Israel's
hydro-electric project, which was
finally scheduled for Jan. 14 -
one day before the deadline set.
•by the previous meeting of Dec.
29-was postponed at the very last
minute. A UN official revealed
early on Jan. 14 that the three
powers, the United States, Bri-
tain and France, had asked for
a postponement until Jan. 21.
Arab maneuvering which in-
cluded Syrian Ambassador Farid
Zeinneddine's sudden and hur-
ried flight to the Levant made
the three powers realize that a
meeting at this juncture would
prove utterly useless.
And so, with incessant behind-
the - scenes - meetings going on
uninterruptedly both in and out
of the UN, the Arab campaign
of stalling continues.
Upon receipt of Jordan's
first vague reply to his request
for a conference with Israel
over the border disputes -
based upon Ambassador Abba
Eban's invocation of Article
XII of the Armistice Agree-
ment which makes participa-
tion obligatory upon the par-
ties concerned - Secretary-
General D a\g. Hammarskjold
was put in a very precarious
position by the Arab-League..
influenced Jordanians. Real-
izing what the Arabs were up
to, Mr. Hammarskjold decided
to withhold the content of the
Jordan reply until he had
the opportunity to give the
Jordanians another chance to
clarify their stand. As mat-
ters stood, the reply from
Amman left matters hanging
in the air, and Mr. Ham-
marskjold w a s quite upset.
Should Jordan's second reply
be as vague and negative as
the first, the Secretary-Gen-
eral will have no alternative
but to convoke the conference
just the same. Jordan's ab-
sence from such a conference
would mean a breach of the
armistice agreement and the
Hashemite Kingdom w o u l d
face strong censure from the
UN. The Arabs are not ignor-
ant of this fact. Hence they
find themselves in a sort of
dilemma,.
Jordan's refusal to confer with
Israel h a s greatly enhanced
Ambassador Eban's position
here. It is apparent that Israel
will soon embark upon a poli-
tical offensive against all the
Arab states and demand a show-
down. As a first move, the Israel
government will ask the Security
Council to demand that Egypt
lift her illegal blockade in the
Suez Canal of Israel - bound
shipping. This action may be
expected any day now.
The new Saudi Arabian King
Ibn -A b d u 1 Aziz (Azazel) Al
Saud's recent threat to the ef-

I feet that "Israel to the Arab
world is like a cancer to the
human body, and the only way
of remedy is to uproot it just
like a cancer," makes the follow-
ing prophecy in Psalm 83 come
to life:
"For, lo, Thy enemies are in
an uproar; and they that hate
Thee have lifted up the head.
They hold crafty counsel against
Thy people. They have said:
`Come and let us cut them off
from being a nation; that the
name of Israel may be no more
in remembrance. For they have
consulted together with one con-
sent; against Thee do they make
a covenant-the tents of Edom
and the Ishmaelites; Moab and
the Hagarites; G e b a 1, and
Amman, and Amalek; Philistia.
and the inhabitants of Tyre.
Assyria is also joined with them.
They have been an arm to the
children of Lot." (Psalm 83,
verses 3-9).

Piatigorsky Recovers
Cello Looted by Nazis

NEW YORK, (JTA)-Baroness
Germaine de Rothschild arrived
in New York with an extra-
ordinary gift for her son-in-law,
world famous.cellist Gregor Pia-
tigorsky-a Stradivarius cello
which was looted by the Nazis
from her home
in Paris in 1942.
T h e instru-
ment, which has
a label attesting
to its manufac-
ture in 1712, was
bought and pre-
sented to Piati-
gorsky in 1927
by a group of
music lovers in
Berlin. He left
it in Paris with
the Rothschild
Piatigorsky family when he
came to the United States in
1939.
The instrument was purchased
in Aachen, Germany, by a violin
dealer named Mathias Niessen.
He paid the sum of $200 for it.
After satisfying himself that
Piatigorsky, who no longer had
the documents proving owner-
ship, had actually been the
owner, Niessen turned the cello
over to the Baroness, as Piati-
gorsky's agent, for the $200 he
had paid plus a few dollars for
the repairs he 'had made on
the instrument.
Piatigorsky, who has been
playing on another Stradivarius
cello, was extremely happy to
recover the first one. He indi-
cated, however, that he may
present it to a talented young
artist. The value of the re-
covered cello is estimated at
$50,000.
