Lee Shubert Services
At Temple Emanuel
Funeral
services for Lee Shubert, presi-
dent of the vast Shubert Thea-
trical Enterprises and owner of
18 theaters in New York, who
died last week at the Mount
Sinai Hospital here, were held
Sunday in Temple Emanuel. He
was 78 years old.
The son of a Jewish peddler
in Syracuse, where he was born,
Shubert was regarded as the
empire builder of theater chains.
Together with his two brothers,
Jacob and Sam, he started with
a chain of theaters in Syracuse,
Utica and Rochester and later
"invaded" New York. By 1929,
they controlled a theatrical em-
pire worth $400,000,000. During
the depression, this empire col-
lapsed. However, Lee Shubert
bought back many of his in-
terests for $400,000 and rebuilt
them on a smaller but less vul-
nerable scale.

Arrested Arabs Escape
From Military Governor
TEL AVIV, (JTA) — Two Arab
residents of Nazareth, arrested
in connection with a campaign
which the Communist Party is
conducting against continuation
of military administration in
Israel's Arab-inhabited border
districts, escaped from the office
of the military governor.
The Communists are inciting
the Arabs to carry on strikes
and demonstrations and to send
delegations to the Israel military
and police authorities in the dis-
trict.
Two Israeli soldiers on a rou-
tine border patrol near Beit Jib-
rin were murdered and their
guns stolen.
Israel has demanded an emer-
gency meeting of the Israel-Jor-
dan Mixed Armistice Commis-
sion to act on the incident.
Thoughts
articles appearing in Jewish pe-
riodicals in this country and
abroad. The publication is issued
bi-monthly by the Jewish In-
formation Bureau, 103 Park Ave.,
New York, N. Y.
The December bulletin sum-
marizes, among other features,
an article on Judaism in Our
Time, written by Maurice Edel-
man, English-Jewish writer and
member of the British Parlia-
ment, whose recent novel, "Who
Goes Home," was recently re-
viewed in a number of American
newspapers and magazines.
The attitude of alienated Jiw-
ish intellectuals who have just
written their autobiographies
namely, books by Victor Gol--
lancz and Prof. Norbert Wiener,
as reviewed by a number of lead-
ing critics, is summarized in
several articles.
Other items related to the
prosal by Edmond Fleg for a
synthesis of Israel on Diaspora
philosophy are included and
there is a discussion of the Yid-
dish language as it is approach-
ed by leaders of conservative
Judaism.
