Oppose Extension of McCarran Law Provisions
Five prominent Michigan edu-
cators and religious leaders are
among the large number of
sponsors of the National Com-
mittee to Repeal the McCarran.
Act. The committee has made
Public a letter to Senator Wil-
liam Langer, chairman, and
other members of the Senate
Juciciary Committee, asking
them to kill the Butler Bill (S.
1606) in committee.
The Michigan leaders who
have joined in this plea are:
Rev. Paul J. Allured, Lansing;
Prof. Chester A. Arnold, Ann
Arbor; Rev. Warren E. Jackson,
Sher i d a n; Prof. Arthur W.
Munk, Albion; Russell B. Nye,
East Lansing.
"The members of the Senate
Judiciary Committee have the
opportunity and the responsi-
bility to help preserve American
democracy," the open letter
state, "by rejecting the proposed
Bill, S. 1606, to amend the In-
ternal Security Act of 1950." The
Butler bill would extend the pro-
visions of the McCarran Act "to
the 15,000,000 American m e n
and women who have organ-
ized themselves in trade unions,"
the letter continued. "That so
large a segment of our popula-
tion may be deprived of their
freedom of association is cause
for genuine alarm."
