Landsmanshaften Double Bond Effort
To Climax with 'Tribute to Israel' Sunday

Representatives of 40 lands-
manshaften societies in Detroit
paid a double "tribute" to the
State of Israel this week.
Besides concerning themselves
with the success of their annual
israel bond function, called
"Tribute to Israel," set for Sun-
cla,y, at Beth Aaron Synagogue,
they joined in last Sunday's
"BIG Day" sales and collection
drive.
This one-day city-wide cam-
paign was called to hasten the
collection of sorely needed in-
vestment dollars for the young
democracy in the Middle East.
Asking the thousands of
landsmanshaften members in
Detroit to rally to the cause of
Israel, Samuel H. Belkin, chair-
man of the "Tribute", said:
"Recent events have demon-
strated anew that while govern-
mental economic aid to Israel
may vary in accordance with
prevailing moods and predis-
position in the international cli-
mate, Israel must also have a
firm unyielding weather-proof
base of economic support. This
base the Jews of America can
and must provide. Israel Bonds
represent such an opportunity, a

Hard Bargaining Over
Next Israel Cabinet

TEL AVIV, (JTA)—Leaders of
the Mapai Party indicated that
if the General Zionists continue
to put obstacles in the path of
the formation of a new Cabinet
by Acting Premier Moshe Shar-
ett, the Mapai will approach the
smaller parties to form a coali-
tion government without the
General Zionists.
Should the latter move not
prove successful, the Mapai will
call for general elections, the
leaders of the party declared.
Smaller parties have indicated
a willingness to enter a coalition
with the Mapai alone, but at a
price. The Progressives and the
Labor Mizrachi groups demand
scrapping of the proposed elec-
tion law which would restrict
Parliamentary representation to
parties which receive at least 10
percent of the total vote in a
national election. The Mizrachi
and the Labor Mizrachi would
demand prohibition of the sale
of pork in Israel, as one of the
conditions for entering a coali-
tion with the Mapai but without

the General Zionists.
