U.S. Favors Direct Israel-Jordan
Talks, State Department Declares
WASHINGTON, (JTA) — A
State Department official said
on behalf of Secretary John Fos-
ter Dulles that the Department
hopes Israel's action invoking
the Israel-Jordan armistice
agreement to force a face-to-
face conference with Jordan
"will bring about positive re-
sults" --
"We will contribute to this
end as best we can," Durward V.
Sandifer, Deputy Assistant Sec-
retary of State for United Na-
tions Affairs, said in a letter
written on behalf of Mr. Dulles
to Rep. Samuel N. Freidel, of
Maryland.
Rep. Friedel made public the
Sandifer letter which defended
the recent U.S. action censuring
Israel. The letter characterized
Israel as having prejudiced
chances for Near Eastern peace.
It said the United Nations cen-
sure resolution, supported by the
United States against Israel, was
justified by "the facts put before
the Council by the chief of staff
of the United States truce super-
vision organization."
With reference to the Israel
action of Nov. 2, invoking the
Israel-Jordan armistice to force
talks, Mr. Sandifer said this was
Israel's right. In making known
that the Department would "con-
tribute to this end as best we
can,"- Mr. Sandifer added: "We
earnestly hope that tensions will
be reduced and both Israel and
Jordan will demonstrate a readi-
ness to establish a political at-
mosphere which will make pos-
sible progress toward a lasting
settlement."
Syria and Jordan. Presidential
envoy Eric Johnson was cooly
received by the Arabs when he
asked them to consider the
plan on a recent trip to the
Near East. He expects to re-
turn in February.
Gov. Mechem, who headed the
special three-man FOA commis-
sion to study the Arab refugee
question, made plain in the re-
port that he feels an economic
plan insufficient in itself to
solve the problem. "The com-
mission sees no permanent solu-
tion to the refugee problem,"
he said, "until there is a more
favorable political atmosphere
leading to a workable peace es-
tablished between the Arab
states and Israel."
