all geared to ask Mr. Zeined-
dine just what kind of mili-
tary advantage this would be
—particularly since the zone
is, after all, and let it not be
fogotten, part of the land of
Israel—not Syria.

Mr. Zeineddine, at this point,
can proffer no answer. But not
being able to reply never yet
bothered the Arab delegates at
the UN. At least, the complaint
is loud and has the overtones
of martyrdom!
Last week, somewhere in New
York, Ambassador Abba Eban
talked to U. S. Delegate Henry
Cabot Lodge, to British Delegate
Sir Gladwyn Jebb, and to the
French Ambassador to the UN
about Syria's wildly illogical -ob-
j ections.
The most important conclu-
sion reached so far in these
thorough and, we understand,
promising parleys, is the seem-
ing acceptance by all three
powers of the fact that Syrian
consent cannot be made a con-
dition of work on the project,
Israelis around the UN were
working hard last week to con-
vince the powers-that-be to pro-

duce the kind of resolution that
will clearly and finally permit,
if not encourage, resumption of
work at B'not Yaacov.
It is most certainly to be
hoped that the Security Council
will for a Yuletide change, judge
this case on its merits! Among
other facets, this will give
the U. S. Government a chance
to prove to the small nations of
the world that peace on earth
and good will among men are
still on the agenda!
