CELESTE HOLM and ROBERT
PRESTON, stars • of stage and
screen, are coming to Detroit
in the leading roles of "HIS and
HERS," a new comedy by Fay
and Michael Kanin which will
open a pre-Broadway engage-
went of two weeks beginning
Monday evening at the Cass
Theatre. Lovely blonde Miss
Holm, whose rise to stardom has
been sure and swift since she
created the role o Ado Annie—
the "I Ca in't Say No" girl—in
the original production of "Ok-
lahoma," makes her first stage
appearance in "His and Hers"
since "Affairs of State." In "His
and Hers," Celeste is cast as a
lady playwright; and Robert
Preston, whose bravura perform-
ance on Broadway as the im-
passioned ex-halfback in "The
Male Animal" is still cited as
near-classic, portrays her ex--
husband, also a playwright.

Hail. Court Decision Barring Bible
Distribution in the Public Schools

NEW YORK, (JTA)—Leaders
of various Jewish organizations
issued statements hailing as a
victory for the cause of religious
liberty a "unanimous decision
Of the'. New Jersey Supreme
Court that the King James ver-
sion of the Bible cannot be dis-
tributed in the State's public
schools.
The court issued a permanent
injunction in favor of a Jewish
parent against the Gideon Soci-
ety, an international Bible dis-
tributing agency, blocking the
use of Rutherford, N. J., public
schools for free distribution of
Bibles to students.
Chief Justice Arthur T. Van-
derbilt said, in a decision writ-
ten for the court, that school
distribution of New Testament
Bibles would violate constitu-
tional provisions for the separa-
tion of church and state. The
use of schools to distribute such
religious materials, he pointed
out, "would cast aside all prog-
ress made in the United States
and throughout New Jersey

in the field of religious toler-
ance and freedom."
"We would be renewing the
ancient struggles among the
various religious faiths to the
detriment of all; this we must
decline to do," the Chief Justice
declared. The Supreme Court
ruling set aside a lower court
verdict which permitted the
Bible program.
The Jewish leaders who
praised the ruling of the court
included Dr. Israel Goldstein,
president of the American Jew-
ish Congress; Bernard H. Trag-
er, chairman of the National
Community Relations Advisory
Council; Norman Salit, president
of the Synagogue Council of
America, and others.
The New York Herald Tribune,
in an editorial commenting on
the verdict hailed it as "a good
reaffirmation of freedom toler-
ance and common sense" and
declared the court "has spoken
well."
