Ground was broken earlier this month for
a new branch of the United Hebrew Schools,
to be located on Schaefer Highway, south of
Seven Mile Rd. Shown is the architect's sketch
of the building, which will be known as the

Esther Berman Branch. Designed to replace
the present, overcrowded 'structure, the
branch will contain the central administrative
offices, a library and an auditorium seating
300 people.

United Jewish Appeal's three-
day annual national conference
taking place this weekend in
New York, to set the stage for
the Appeal's 1954 nationwide
campaign.
The three-day Conference, at
the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, is
meeting to assess and fix the
sums which the American Jew-
ish community will be asked to
contribute to the United Jewish
Appeal in 1954 for the settle-
ment and development of Israel,
the welfare and rehabilitation of
distressed Jews in European and
Moslem lands, and refugee set-
tlement and adjustment in the
United States.

Psychologist to Address
Circle on Kinsey Report

Dr. Maurice Floch, local
psychologist, will discuss "What
• Did Kinsey Mean?" an evalua-
tion of the second Kinsey re-
port, at a meeting of the Work-
men's Circle at 9:30 p.m., today,
in the Circle Center, 11529 Lin-
wood. Mrs. Sara Kaplan, chair-
man, urges the public to attend.
Bill Lipson, chairman of the
Circle's recent Clothes for Ko-
rea drive stated that "through
the hundreds of householders
who participated we were
swamped with men's, women's
and children's garments."
Nearly three tons of clothing
was collected, and is now on its
way to St. Louis, Mo. where the
American Relief for Korea will
ship the clothes to that war-
torn area.

bookstores in the Midwest. With

Tuesday to spend five days in
Detroit before continuing her
tour of the United States and
Canada as a special emissary
from Histadrut in Israel.
Born in Jaffa, Mrs. Samuel
was reared in a Hebrew-speak-
ing environment. Her father,
Yehuda Grasovsky was a cele-
brated Hebrew scholar and for
a time manager of the Anglo-
Palestine Bank in Beirut.
Mrs. Samuel, during her child-
hood explored every corner of
Palestine, learned Arabic and
attended the Hebrew Teachers
College. During World War I
her family assisted in the for-
mation of the Jewish Legion,
and it was at that time Mrs.
Samuel met and formed her life-
long friendship with the late
Dr. Chaim Weizmann.
In 1920, she
married Sir
Herbert Samuel,
son of Pale-
stine's first
British High
C o m missioner.
Today, they
have two sons,
both of whom
graduated from
Oxford, served
as majors in the
British Army
during World
War II a n d Mrs. Samuel
eventually served Israel in the
War for Liberation.

NW Rescue Women
Seeking New Members

Northwest Child Rescue Wom-
en is currently carrying out a
drive for increased membership
to support its program of aiding
needy children the world over,
it was announced this week by
Mrs. Milton Kogan, president.
Organized over five years ago,
the organization today numbers
47 women who are devoted to
raising funds for furnishing and
equipping a dietetic kitchen in
the Girls' Vocational Training
School at Tel Aviv, Israel.
The Northwest Child Rescue
Women have gained some local
prominence for their work in
financing and sending mentally
retarded children to summer
camps in the Detroit area.

Avrunin Will Speak at
Final Blue Book Seminar

The final. session in the series
of four Blue Book Seminars,
sponsored by the Women's Divi
sion of the Jewish Welfare Fed-
eration will be presented at 10:45
a.m. today in the Fred M. But-
zel Memorial Building.
William Avrunin, associate di-
rector of the Jewish Welfare
Federation, guest speaker for
this session, will discuss the
theme "Whither Federation."
Phases of the topic which will
be discussed include: "How Pro-
grams are Developed in a Fed-
eration," "What Type of Pro-
grams are Undertaken and
Why," "Why do Programs Move
Ahead Faster on the Local Level
than on the National Level,"
and "What Areas of Services Are
Expanding."
Planning the session is Mrs.
li.. Marcuse, chairman.

During her stay in Detroit,
Mrs. Samtiel will meet with a
number of groups, including the
Maimonides Medical Auxiliary,
branches of the Labor Zionist
Organization and Arlazaroff
Branch 137 of the .Farband.
She also will be guest of honor
at several private receptions ar-
ranged by Detroiters who, while
visiting in Israel, have come to
know and admire her and her
devoted service to Zionism.

planned by Branches Four and
Six, LZOA, at 8:30 p.m., Dec. 18,
at the home of the Sidney Shev-
itz', 18300 Oak Dr. Laible Hoff-
mitz and Norman Drachler, re-
spective chairmen, invite all
