Story of Joseph Barondess Labor Leader Who Aided Zionist Cause
Joseph Barondess came to
•America from Kamenetz, Po-
doisk, when he was 21 years old
and lived here for 40 stormy
years. He was a man whose
name could truly be written as
d'one who loves his fellow man."
When there was suffering any-
where Barondess suffered. When
he heard of people anywhere
who were cold or hungry or mal-
treated it hurt him.
Barondess was extremely ten-
der-hearted, but, unlike some
tender-hearted people who only
suffer with the afflicted he took
definite steps to help those in
need. No one who ever came to
him for help was turned away.
He not only had a good word for
all but stood ever ready to help.
His deep sympathy for the
suffering and needs of the un-
derprivileged first led Barondess

the party line of cosmopolitan-

even the Jewish religion itself,
was extremely repugnant to him
and he afterward found much
more fertile fields for his tal-

service and in the Zionist Move-

In 1903, largely because Zion-

joined the Zionist Movement and
served it faithfully until his
death.
His withdrawal from the rad-

filiation with Zionism didn't
cause Barondess to abandon the
cause of labor. He was blessed

labor leader as well as a great
Zionist leader.
Barondess, the friend of labor,
Zionism, Hebrew education, and
in truth of all humanity and all
good causes died in 1928 a month
after he was elected president of
the Jewish National Fund. His
death plunged New York's
masses into a genuine demon-
stration of mourning such as
has seldom been seen in that
city. His remains were taken to
Eretz Israel for final burial.

JOSEPH BARONDESS helped
his nephew, Samuel Goldman,
who now resides with his family
at 20239 Warrington, Detroit,
enter the United States. Gold-
man worked his way across the
seas on a boat and was denied
entrance to this country, in
1920. Barondess paid his head
tax and helped him get in and
become established here.
Three other Goldman broth-
ers — Barondess' cousins — are
known in Detroit. Nathan and
Irving Goldman still reside here,
and another cousin, Charles
Goldman, a former Detroiter,
now makes his home in Chicago.

SAMUEL GOLDMAN speaks
nostalgically about Barondess,
about his many good deeds,
about his genius as leader, or-
ganizer, public speaker.
Barondess was well known to
many Detroiters, having cam-
paigned here for the Keren
Hayesod and other Zionist
causes.
Among the many interesting
letters preserved by Sam Gold-
man is one which Barondess
wrote on Sept. 3, 1924, his cousin
Nathan Goldman, who then op-
erated the Milwaukee Drug Store
at 6488 Chene St. Barondess
then wrote:
"During my recent trip to
Canada, I learned that the Can-
adian government is determined
not to admit any immigrants
who are stranded in Cuba. The
Minister of Immigration and
Colonization named as his rea-
son the fact that'the steamship
companies have misrepresented
the facts to these unfortunate
passengers. They knew full well
that there was nothing for these
immigrants to do in Cuba, but
they took them there simply be-
cause of the fare they received.
He stated that these stranded
immigrants must first return to
a European port, and then they
may apply to the I.C.A. in Paris
to be included in the 100 immi-
grants per week allotted to us
by Canada. They go on the
principle : `Schlage ich mein
Yuden, Schlage ich deine Yu-
den.' Because these steamship
companies lied and misrepre-
sented the facts to the aliens,
they must travel to some Euro-
