DAVE DIAMOND -

A

year-long study of 10 for-
mer German Nazis reveals that
none today thinks Hitler did
any moral wrong, says a former
University of Chicago teacher
who was commissioned to make
a detailed investigation of the
development of National So-
cialism in the life of the ordi-
nary German.
Writing in the December issue
of Harper's Magazine, Milton
Mayer observes that nine of the
ten he came to know intimately
"did not worship Hitler any
more than we worship FDR or
Ike."
Mayer was a visiting faculty
member of the Institute of So-
cial Research of Frankfurt Uni-
versity. Of the 10 Germans he
studied, six were simply mem-
bers of the Nazi party and the
other four were only minor
functionaries. They included a
cabinetmaker, a bill-collector, a
baker,.a policeman, a teacher, a
bank clerk, a university student,
a salesman, and a tailor and his
son, who was his apprentice.
Mayer points out that as "we
know Nazism, it was a naked,
total tyranny which degraded
its adherents and enslaved its
opponents and adherents alike;
terrorism and terror in daily
life; brute, personal and mob
injustice; a flank attack upon
God and a frontal attack upon
human worth and the rights
which human worth implies.".
But, he adds: "These nine
ordinary Germans knew it ob-
soletely otherwise, and they still
know it otherwise."
None of them, he continues,
know, either of their own
knowledge or second-hand, of
the great Nazi crimes against
humanity such as the slaughter
of the Jews or the operation of
the concentration canWs-
