McCarthy Isn't Anti-Semitic,
Says Confidential Magazine
An American Jewish Press Feature
"Is Senator Joe McCarthy
Anti-Semitic?" asks Confidential
Magazine in its current issue
and promptly answers that he
isn't. "Regardless of what you
may think of him otherwise, the
junior Senator from Wisconsin
(McCarthy) is not an anti-
Semite," says Confidential in its
article by Gene Ford.
As evidence Ford quotes Ben-
jamin R. Epstein, national di-
rector of the Anti-Defamation
League of Bnai Brith, who said,
"Our files reflect no evidence of
anti-Semitic activity on the part
of Senator McCarthy."
Also quoted are prominent
Jews, both .pro and anti-McCar-
thy, who have defended the
Senator against charges of anti-
Semitism. Rabbi S. A. Fineberg,
Community service director of
the American Jewish Commit-
School
Synagogue
Laboratory
Library
tee who was called a frequent
and severe critic of McCarthy in
the field of politics was quoted
as saying, "To call a man anti-
Semitic when he is not is un-
just and such unwarranted
charges are always harmful to
Jewry. I deplore him (McCar-
thy) being accused of this as-
sertation in some quarters, espe-
cially since it is used to the
advantage of the Communists.
The Intermountain Jewish
News was said to be a McCarthy
opponent- on political matters
and was quoted as saying, ". . .
our Jewish spokesmen should be
careful about recklessly using
the `McCarthyism' label as a
synonym for anti-Semitism."
Rabbi Benjamin Schultz was
called a strong supporter of Mc-
Carthy and was quoted as say-
ing, "On the human side he
(McCarthy) has fought the at-

against his able assistants, Cohn

McCarthy has m a ri y Jew-
ish friends and I resent the nec-
essity of defending him against
completely unfounded accusa-
tions of anti-Semitism."
In his article Ford pointed out
that McCarthy's campaign man-
ager during the 1952 campaign
in Wisconsin was Steve J. Miller
and that a strong McCarthy
supporter was James J. Pack-
man, managing editor of the
Milwaukee Sentinel. Both Miller
and Packman are Jewish.
Ford clinched his argument by
stating that Gerald L. K. Smith,
whom he called America's worst
anti-Semite, criticized McCarthy
for being pro-Semitic.
